Hi all, hoping to hear from anyone who has experienced this.

My very naughty cat Biscuit broke into the laundry cupboard and chewed through a food bag around 4pm Sunday. I was concerned that he might have ingested some of the plastic bag (the type with metallic backing). When I puzzled it back together, only small bits were missing. He ate normally that evening.

On Monday morning though he vomitted all his breakfast. I called my vet who wasn't too worried as it was likely just a small amount of soft plastic that will pass on its own. The vet told me to watch for normal pooping and that he eats without vomiting. For the rest of Monday and all of Tuesday, Biscuit has pooped and eaten fine.

However this morning (Wednesday), he's vomitted up his breakfast again. He is otherwise his usual self.

Obviously I'll go to the vet if anything changes with his behaviour or poop or if he continuously vomits.

Keen to hear from anyone whose experienced something like this, especially how long it would take for all symptoms to resolve if the plastic does just pass by itself.

This is the food bag, it looks like more plastic is gone but when I folded the shredded bits together it was only a bit. And this is Biscuit post-gorge.

Oh Biscuit, you just had to raid the cabinet did you? 🤦🏼‍♀️
Lol this is one of those funny/not funny situations, and sadly I've been in the "oh mom, I chewed something I shouldn't have!" situation.
To forewarn you, don't be surprised if he vomits a few more times. My experience with Sadie when she ate an extremely small piece of plastic bag, was that it stuck to the inside of her digestive tract. Also, since she couldn't break down or "digest" the plastic, it stayed in there longer. If I remember, it was probably about a week. It irritated her GI pretty good though, so in between meals she would get sick every so often. When she finally passed it, I swear it was no bigger than the size of a dime!
I agree with your vet - just wait and be on 💩 watch, and keep an eye on Biscuit to make sure he is still eating, using the litter box, and isn't getting sick too often.

Good luck, I hope he feels better soon!!

Thank you so much, so reassuring! Yes it was very funny/unfunny and to be honest I was a bit impressed at his cleverness and persistence...
I hadn't considered that it might be a bit of plastic just stuck and irritating things for now, that's good to know!
I fed him a little bit of food shortly after posting and he kept that down, so I might break his meals in half for a few days to keep his tummy settled.
Thanks again!

A previous cat, Milo, did this several years ago. He found a 20 pound bag of emergency dry cat food in a very obscure place (which I thought was safe) and ate about 17 pounds of it before I figured out why he was vomiting. Of course, the bag was ingested in pieces as well, although he spit most of it out. I ran to the vet before I found the bag of food and the vet commented on how big and healthy Milo looked and could find nothing wrong, really. When we got home, I figured it out. He did continue to vomit but he was fine in the end.

I agree that you should watch Biscuit just in case and return to the vet if this does not resolve itself entirely.

Hi again, just wondering if anyone experienced diarrhea as well as vomiting when their cheeky cats ingested the soft plastic? Biscuit swallowed the plastic a whole week ago now. He vomitted just twice, but has had some diarrhea in the last 48 hours. I've booked the vet for tomorrow evening just in case.

You are doing the right thing to go to the vet. Let us know what you find out. Plastic is a little different from the older bags that were mostly paper and can react differently in the intestinal tract. It does not mean that Biscuit will not be okay though.

I agree, vet visit is the best. I'm trying to remember Sadie's episode... I know the vomiting was bad, I think before she passed the "foreign object" she did have some loose stool? But we did have a few vet visits in between to make sure nothing else was in there. The second visit is when they did the X-ray that showed "something" was in there; the third vet visit for check-up after it passed showed everything was clear (though she still had some GI irritation.)
Good luck, keep us posted! 🙏🏼💓

Hi all, the vet wasn't worried. He gave Biscuit a really good physical exam (no diagnostics though) and couldn't feel any problems. Biscuit has a fever too which the vet thinks is likely a resurgence of his feline coronavirus (along with the diarrhea). So either he did eat some plastic and passed it/will pass it or he never ate any and the vomitting was a coincidence! Who knows.
Thanks everyone for your advice!
