It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I am writing this tribute to let you know Carleton passed away yesterday. šŸ˜¢ He was slowing down but we attributed it to his senior age, approximately 14 years old. His appetite kept dwindling, he was lethargic, urinating more and had difficulty sitting in a comfortable position. I called the vet and brought him in for an exam and treatments. I had high hopes because he had always bounced back before and I didnā€™t want to face the inevitable. But when his labs indicated end stage renal disease I knew we had to make a decision for his sake. It was the most humane thing to do.

My husband and I are devastated. He meant so much to us and we would have moved heaven and earth to keep him here longer. I have written about his background before in other posts. He came from deplorable conditions at a hoarder. After receiving medical care he was adopted to a couple who returned him a year later for the only reason that they didnā€™t want a pet anymore. Our dog had passed away and shortly after Neely, our last cat. We were without a pet and the house felt empty. It was actually our oldest daughter who found a small shelter that was called in to rescue 23 Persians. The neighbors had called the police to report a horrific stench coming from the hoarderā€™s garage. Long story short, when we heard Carletonā€™s story I put in an application to adopt him and the rest is history. I later found out that the hoarder had to pay a fine up to $1,500 for each cat with the possibility of serving time.

The first night we brought Carleton home we set up the bathroom in our bedroom with a furry teepee, litter box, food water and toys. But he kept meowing so DH went in there and slept on the floor next to him. When my husband's back started hurting he said, ā€œwhat the heck,ā€ and let him out in the bedroom. Carleton jumped into bed, cuddled up with us and we knew adopting him was the best decision we ever made. He was our baby boy, the most loving and affectionate cat we could have hoped for, giving us almost nine years of complete joy and happiness. :catlove:

As so many of you have sadly experienced, we can not stop crying since yesterday. Everything we did out of habit we cannot stop doing, e.g. looking for him resting on my slippers by the patio door, refreshing the food and water bowls, even checking the litter box. But the one habit that I miss most is when he kept me company on the family room couch while watching tv at night. He would curl up next to me and weā€™d fall asleep together. He was unable to jump up the past few weeks. But the night before we brought him to the vet to be PTS he somehow managed to jump up on the couch and with tears streaming down my face I told him this would be our last night together. šŸ˜æ

Rest in peace my baby boy. You will be missed beyond belief. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. ā£

Oh, neely neely , I am so sorry to read this terrible news about Carleton. As I unfortunately know, kidney disease can be silently progressing without any alarming signs until it's reached that late stage. Sending you and your husband love as you deal with your loss of dear Carleton. He was such a gorgeous cat. RIP sweet boy.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind sentiments and special thoughts. šŸ¤— I hadn't said too much about Carleton's health because I honestly didn't know more until we received the lab results. I just knew something was wrong and had to get him to the vet. It's a difficult loss for us and I'm having trouble coping but all your support helps.

I am so sorry for your loss of Carleton and was completely shocked when I saw this a few minutes ago. He is a beautiful boy with that regal coat and loving eyes. He knew as soon as you adopted him that he had finally found his forever family and your love made up for his rough start in life with both the hoarder and the bad adopters. Kidney disease can be insidious and can make a final unsuspected move, even with the best of care. I hope that over time all of the wonderful memories of Carleton will return to comfort you and your husband.

I, too, am shocked, and so very sorry for your loss. As you know, every cat here is like our very own, so we all share in the pain, although I know your pain is much greater. Time will make it easier, and gradually you will be able to remember the good times rather than the end.

Run free at the Bridge, darling :rbheart: Carleton :rbheart:

I'm so very sorry neely neely . Carleton couldn't have landed in a better place than with you and your hubby. He knew love, he knew care, he knew safety and he knew what is was to be wanted. He knew perfect -thanks to you and hubby.

but is still hurts and it's not fair.

Rest it peace beautiful boy. Pick a nice warm spot to rest while you wait.

*hugs to you all*

When I saw the name Carleton, my initial thought was, "It can't be." I am so sorry. I am glad that he had the opportunity to know love and also to be put on a pedestal, because I know you all did that. neely neely please extend my condolences to your husband. This may not be much comfort, but you gave Carleton the wonderful home all cats deserve and not many get. My heart is broken and again, I am so sorry.

Oh neely neely , My heart stopped beating for a moment when I saw the headline.. No, not Carleton..
I know what you and your family are going through.. I really can empathize..

I am so sorry for your loss... ((((hugs))) šŸ’”šŸ’” šŸ˜æ. I wish I could somehow comfort you.. but it takes time.. and I am still going through the grief process, myself..

Words can be trite at this time, but please know that you treated Carleton the best, that anyone could have ever treated him. He knew Love... and more Love, and yes, he was probably spoiled rotten.. He was your special boy.
He knew that the instant you took him home. Carleton immediately sensed the love coming from you..

Yes, I know what it is like.. I am still finding some pieces of litter around here--- despite all the cleaning and time period... Yes, I still see a glimpse of Geoffrey around, and sometimes hear his squeaky voice, sometimes feel him slightly against me...
I know what you mean about expecting to see Carleton around the corner, on a chair, your bed, or just there... I get it..

iPappy iPappy Yes, 2024 has been a horrible year... I hope it stops...

love to you, Neely, and your family...
