Sara's correct, Hibiscus. They're usually treated as an annual around here (cause they're so cheap,) and you can find them very inexpensively in the springtime at the home centers and nurseries.

Here's a neat website I just found:

http://www.trop-hibiscus.com/index.html

Haven't explored it yet, but looks promising!

I didn't realize they got that big. I sent my mother in Florida one a few years ago. Now I'm jealous as they wont grow here.

Where in Washington are you? If you're closer to the coast you might be able to grow hardy hibiscus! I didn't even know there was such a thing to tell you truthfully, I assumed they were all tropicals and the hardy varieties don't look as if they're as showy, but they're hardy to zone 4!

Yep, yep...like everyone said: hibiscus! There are SO many varieties of hibiscus and they come in so many sizes, shapes, and colors! They're found all over the place here in Florida. I always think they're so beautiful

I'm thinking so...but then again, I could be wrong as well!

No more "Florida Beach Bums" siggy?? That one was my favorite. It always put a smile on my face.

Can't let my mom see those pics. She has been wanting some for the longest time. Had a pink one but it died. We have some of its cousins in the Mallow family - Rose of Sharon in bloom now.
