Hi! I don't check this site very often so I missed all the messages.
We never did figure out exactly what was causing the brown spot. It would come off with hydrogen peroxide at the vet's (would not recommend this at home). We tried apple cider vinegar at home and that helped clean up some of the crustiness. The vet said it could just be a case of solar dermatitis. It eventually stopped recurring and faded. A year later it appeared again but not as intense and faded away on it's own.
I would recommend finding a speciality dermatologist rather than a GP vet.
