Obviously my (not so little) Tato isn't a breed, considering that he was found in the snow as a baby. But since he's almost a year old now and starting to gain such a distinctive look, I thought it'd be fun to speculate on him once again and see what others think of my boy!

Tato is a whopping 16 lbs now and everyone comments on how enormous his feet look.

He is also still VERY floppy, like a great big sack of jello. He is the kind of cat that doesn't walk down the stairs...he lays down and, half rolls, half slithers until he reaches the bottom, then he just...puddles.

He is extremely floppy! Picking him up makes him go completely limp. (I included a picture)

We joke that he's a panda bear at heart!

In the last few months he's started growing long fur on his cheeks that give him the hilarious illusion that he has massive, fat droopy jowls.

So cute!!
The color, longish hair, size, and floppy behavior are all things found in Ragdoll cats. The color/pattern is also super similar to a Snowshoe cat.

Thanks for the insight! He does remind me quite a bit of a ragdoll in personality, but the markings on his face are so different! Not tidy at all like most of the ragdolls and snowshoes I've seen. But he is very unique and I love him. :)

He is beautiful😻 I would say he is a dlh medium hair rag doll / snow shoe type cat… his eyes are blue so I think he is a color point with white, which is what snowshoes are, they were developed from siamese cats who showed white spotting… and his pattern looks maybe like the harlequin bicolor pattern a bit too. He looks cross eyed which was a siamese trait for a long time but it has been mostly bred out now.

Thank you for your insight! I did not know that the crossed eyes were being bred out. Very interesting! Yes he is cross-eyed. Mostly in one eye, but the other one is a little crossed as well.

His "mane" (if you could call it that) is a little goofy...he has such puffy long fur around his neck and it makes him look odd. 😂

As his fur continues to grow longer I hope that it starts to look a little less like I've stuck his collar on too tight.

He doesn't seem to have the traditional "fluffy" fur that sticks out in whisps all over the place. It's an even, thick puff all over but getting longer all the time. He feels like a dense, downy pillow that your fingers can disappear into.

Are there terms for different coat textures?

I think he could be genetically a longhair(only a specific test could prove it- I think), but have what is called medium hair length, because his fur is very plush, my Merlin was like that but I called him a shorthair, but he had ear tufts small ones and big ones in his paw pads. He was also a large dsh, ginger kitty. When I brushed him and my longhair kitty, he loved it and shed out more fur in the comb, but Zena the long hair sheds more overall. If you look at British Shorthair you will see they also have that very thick, plush fur too, to the point I wonder why they are called shorthair sometimes. But I guess it goes more by the length.

Usually though, they have longer hair on their tail if truly longhair.

Was he neutered later in life? Than can also give that effect at their face/chin area along with the plush fur etc.

Mostly people say lh, sh or medium hair which is really long hair genetically. But each cat can have a different texture and plushness. Like Wizard who was part siamese but who had even shorter hair than Quinn who is a pb siamese and has more plush fur. And Sybil had very long guard hairs which are a trait of NFC cats, she was a mix, while Zena a dlh has the floof but not quite as floofy and long guard hairs like Sybil. Some have curly hair too or hairless so those are terms too. I guess people have different terms for it- here is site

Thanks for the info! Very interesting!

He was neutered at about four months. This is what he looked like as a kitten. The fur (definitely not tomcat cheeks, it's all fluff and getting longer all the time) started growing in a few months ago and lately as really taken off, giving him a very fluffy look about the face.

He is a very beautiful cat and he looks like a cuddle bug 😁 His tail does look longer haired in that kitten pic. I think some cats just have more of the jowl look depending on their face shape etc. and then add in his fur etc. If you look at original siamese cats brought here, the uneutered males who were bred have the larger jowls etc. But they are more delicate and have the traditional siamese look which is not as exaggerated, or elongated. Here is Merlin, who was neutered at about 1 year maybe a bit after. I am not positive how old he was when he showed up, maybe 6 months and he was not tnr until later due to various things. He was about 18 pounds at one point and a big guy too even with out being a bit overweight 😁 He also had the biggest head of any of my kitties.
