So this is potentially (hopefully) an easy one. Katherine is bored. She ALWAYS wants to play. And I’m really interested in helping her out. Usually her favorite toy is a mousie we put on a long string. It can be dangled in front of her, dragged, moved quickly, “jump”, all sorts of stuff. I can go from room to room with cat in tow.  We have it set up high with a heavy sand bag on it. So when no one’s playing with her directly the mousie just hangs on a string and she can entertain herself. When I pull out the stick the string is attached to she knows we’re playing around the house. I know she wants to play because she’ll rub upstairs and sit in front of the mousie as it hangs and stare at the stick. If she REALLY wants to play she’ll even meow and then tap the mousie once or twice.

Here’s the problem. She’s gotten bored. She’ll still sit in front of the mousie and look at it or the stick. Maybe even tap it. And she’ll bug you until you go upstairs so she can do this. So the signal is clearly “I want to play”. The problem is the last several times I’ve taken the mousie out and about, she’d been bored with it. She’ll walk with me, but she won’t chase or pounce the actual mousie. For a while I tried to mix it up a bit by hiding the mousie in place, having it jump, it began to move very quick in jolts, but now no matter what I do she’s bored with it. She’ll watch it and that’s it. She’s bored of her other toys too. She won’t chase a mousie you throw anymore. Her chase the laser light. I got her briefly to play with a feather but it was real brief and she’s never liked feathers. So I’m kind of at a loss. She’s signally play but she’s bored of all her toys. And I can’t keep filling my house with toys. She’s got a cat tree she never uses already. Thoughts?

When her energy builds up she begins to get dangerously bold. Like she’s begun darting outside to the garage. She’s not supposed to be outside the house or in the garage. At one point we decided maybe let’s do controlled sessions outside. So we bought a leash and a cat harness and for a few minutes we’ve been taking her outside. It’s been good. She gets to chew on grass, sniff things, chase moths and flies a bit. If she gets somewhere she’s not supposed to be, isn’t walking with you or in the right direction, you can usually do a polite “psst” sound and she’ll move on with you. Sunday we ventured to the front yard for the first time. Oh my there was so much new stuff to smell. And for a while she was a good girl. Sniffing, climbing, walking, exploring, never going anywhere too far or where she shouldn’t. Listening when I said “psst” to correct her. Then suddenly she decided she had to go to the street. I kept telling her no and trying to let her know we needed to go another direction but she was just determined as all heck to get to the road. So much so she actually fought me on it and wiggled out of her HARNESS! At that point I grabbed her up and threw her back inside. Party over. It’s dangerous on the road. But that’s what I’m talking about. She’s usually very good, polite, listens, etc. but she’s been so bored lately that when she got really excited suddenly she became bull headed to the point she was in a potentially dangerous situation.

Can you get another cat? Two cats can entertain each other when you can't.

I am hotly opposed to a cat harness but that's purely my opinion. I have come to the conclusion that my companion cat will not play...hence the term: companion cat. On the other hand? Your problem seems to be losing interest fast. No definitely the street is a horror story. Unsafe for any cat. You and other cat parents choose the harness which I'm puzzled by because cats need to be free to move alone. Safety first is vital when making sure cats get fresh air. Boredom is always cured by variation. I have two cross training routes. Hill or park. I live created two routines...sorta. Mouse and walk. Both fill a need but mouse seems lacking in some ways while the walk isn't. Might I suggest expounding the mouse game? Jazz it up a bit? And please have patience with her on walks. Stuff like that takes time and I'm sure it's enjoyable for you both.

Both fill a need but mouse seems lacking in some ways while the walk isn't. Might I suggest expounding the mouse game? Jazz it up a bit? And please have patience with her on walks. Stuff like that takes time and I'm sure it's enjoyable for you both.

I walk one of my cats on a harness.  Mostly we explore the yard and he will go down a few houses and explore their front yards.  Eclipse can climb trees, jump onto the fences and wall (6 ft) and still manages to catch bugs.  It doesn't stop him from running and jumping or stalking.  It does enable me to keep him from running in front of cars, and to keep him away from dangers like lilies, auto fluids in the street and wild animal scat.  He is also able to back out of it so if he manages to get away and the leash gets stuck somewhere, I know he will not be trapped.

Yeah, my cat gets really bored too.  We have a lot of different toys, eventually we had to put them all away and take out a different one every couple days so they are on rotation.  She really likes this wand toy that just has a really long strip of cloth on the end and when you wave it the cloth is like a ribbon snake.  That one stays out because she likes to drag it around.  She brings it to you all the time and wants treats for it.  I walk this cat every night.  She climbs trees, she chases bugs in the grass, she sniffs everything, we have a lot of rock walls and decorative rock formations and she plays king of the mountain... If she wears herself out on the walk then I may get 4-6 hours of sleep without interruption.  She sleeps during the day when I am at work and I cannot stop that, but she is up when I get home, and up all evening before bed.  We have a play session in the morning, a walk at night, and another play session (sometimes) following the walk.  Before I go to work, and sometimes before I go to bed, I fill up there treat toys (one is the temptations mouse and the other is the friskies string treat mouse) and she entertains herself on those.  At night she is our watch cat.  She will get up in my bedroom window and look out, and then pretty soon she takes off running to the living room to look out the patio doors, then a few minutes later, wham, here she comes back to the bedroom window with a detour across the bd to make sure nothing happened to me while she was out.  If I roll over at night, no matter where she is, she will come in a flash to see if it is time to get up.  She gets her hopes up if I have to get up and answer a call of nature... Poor thing, I almost feel sorry for her she looks so crest fallen when I stumble back to bed.  Our cats also have tunnels and cubes... they really like those.

She is the companion cat we got for our first cat, who used to do the same thing, which is why we got her a companion.  Now the other cat sleeps all the time and this one is bored. I am NOT getting another companion.

Tati is just barely one, so I hope soon she will start settling down a little.  Our other cat liked me to turn the laser on for her before I went to work or bed.  She still likes a good game of chase the dot, and sometimes, if she is tired, she doesn't chase it, but she still likes to watch it.

Handsome kitty? How long is this leash? I have seen the harness. Anna el has a closed in environment and solid boundaries. She scared me once but she didn't and would never go into the street. She has a spot she likes to sit in for hours. This harness, ones I've seen, don't have a long leash. How did you get one that long or did you make it yourself??? Cats need lots of room to move. She likes to run late spring and late summer but the problem is the friends she runs around the world with in spring aren't there come late summer. She handles it as best she can but I'm puzzled as to why there are no cats come late summer. The cat harness? If you're old enough to remember the mid 80 s and attempts to use them on 4 year olds at the mall etc? Is that where this idea for one for cats and from? I don't judge the thing my ut glad we don't have to use it.

@siamiam2  It's just a regular 6 ft leash.  When the cat runs, I run.  When he jumps on the fence, I am next to him.  He actually climbs down my back to get off. When he climbs the trees I am next to him, but I won't let him climb higher than I can reach.  Sometimes he gets frustrated with me because I refuse to go near webs with larges spiders and I can't fit everywhere he wants to squeeze through.  We started when he was about 16 weeks old.  We grill every night and he was always trying to run out the door, so I just put the harness on him and took him out while dinner was being prepared.

He is almost 1 1/2yo and there are parts in the yard where I will let go of the leash and he will chase toys I wave around.  But I have to be alert because if he sees a bird he is off and running.

My experience with walking my cat on a harness is that i follow him where he wants to go. If he's doing something I don't want him to, he gets picked up and taken inside. For minor infractions, I just pick him up and set him back down where he is supposed to be. He learned early on to behave on leash this way. 

My cat was bored too. Then I got him a kitten. Now he's not bored anymore, but I still have to entertain her. Luckily she is easily entertained.

Seems you have a good system going that works for you both Handsome kitty. Few men are cat people but you obviously go out of your way for yours out of love. Grill? Annabel loves real fish so when I buy salmon she's all into it. She needs a lot of meat but what cat wouldn't love a fresh piece of fish. Spiders are safe as long as they're little. It's the big ones you have to worry about.

Wow, I have not been getting notifications of any of these responses. Thank you all so much for replying. I’ll try a little catch up. Can’t do another cat. We tried and it was a disaster. I don’t think any of the other people in the house will allow it. Katherine for sure as she became a seek and destroy missile. The other cat lived in fear under the bed. We did this for like a month and said, nope. I posted earlier on the forum about it.

The harness. So far iv’e tried two different styles. The harness that came with the leash as part of a cat walking kit, and a harness that’s just a harness. When she initially slipped out she was wearing the other harness as I thought it might be easier to put on her and more comfortable for her. Fewer adjustments. Clearly, that was a mistake.

So I put her in the harness that came with the leash. From here while still inside the house, I picked her up and then put her on the couch holding only the part of the harness the leash grabs. When she didn’t want to be on the couch anymore she simply walked backwards and popped out of the harness. So that’s awesome. Katherine no longer gets to go outside. If she won’t listen and won’t stay in the harness I can’t guarantee her safety and shelter. And in my city being a animal from Animal Control, if she’s caught again I get a fine. It was something I signed when I bought her. So these mad dashes to the garage and the back yard need to be taught real quick are a no.

As for boredom. I’m trying to play with her after work for a bit. And sometimes in the morning. She seems less bold, and less energetic if I do. And yeah if you really play with her she’ll sleep better at night. It’s just sometimes she gives that play signle, and then doesn’t want that toy. So I don’t know what she wants.

Eclipse can get out of his harness too.  I just make sure to stay behind him so he can't back out.

I also have a mesh tent and tunnels so my cats can sit in the yard.  I have upgraded the entry to a cat flap in a board that fits in the window.

Wow! Habitrail for cats? But it seems a bit confining. I get scared to let Annabel go out at night. She's in her spot but I'm scared anyway. It's not that I don't trust our routine-- I sleep during the day and so she never goes out then but? While she meows to me and I keep checking on her its still scary. Which? Your solution where they don't exactly have open air? Or mine where she does? Is it the same? Maybe but there are times when its too cold or too hot or humid at night when she can't. It seems you live where it doesn't get too cold but? Does it ever get too hot and would you let them out in that tent if it was? My guess is no. Also seems the leash is the alternative to the tent.

The tent, tunnels and tower are all mesh.  It's pretty durable.  I've recently replaced most of it.  the sun is brutal here.  When it's too hot the cats don't use it, they stay in the cooler area of the house.  We close it at night.  We have wildlife roaming through the yard.  It's also staked down so I can move it around, that way it doesn't kill the grass.

I have some toys out there and the grass is cut every other week or so and the grass grows through the bottom.

Fluffy prefers the tent.  Eclipse will go out in the tent but he would rather go out on a leash.  As a side note, the tower is just as stable when he climbs the outside as when he climbs the inside.

Eclipse is the black one, aka handsome kitty, and Fluffy is a dilute tortie.  I love when it's nice enough out that Fluffy will take her afternoon nap outside.

I also have birdseed spread out on the walk 6 inches from the tent.  Lots of bird action some days. Once in a while a squirrel is there.   We live near a bird sanctuary and have seen raccoons, possums and skunks in our yard and in front.  I hear there are also gray foxes in the marsh.  In the spring we have a lot of ducks that swim in our pool and eat the bird seed.

It's funny, most of the first floor is windows, and it's still not the same as being outside.

I hope you don't give up on the leash and harness.  It takes some time but eventually you and your cat will get into a routine where you can use words to redirect her.  I can tell Eclipse to go around, or ask him if we can walk a little, or go inside (not popular!).  I've been walking with him for a year and there have been quite a few mishaps, I can laugh now.  I do enjoy our walks together.   Sadly it was too warm for him when we went out earlier and he came inside.  Now he wants to go out but it's dark and 9pm.  I have taken him out at night but I know he won't want to come in for at least an hour and even then I'll have to carry him.

Cats are nocturnal. But...that's not always borne out in our domestic friends. Annabel chooses not to eat overnight except for her 2am feeding. I believe in fresh air. Where you live sounds very natural and comforting. Lots of photo ops or? Just introspective time. Cats and other species is a subject I'm not sure about except humans and dogs. You certainly love your two enough to give them what they need.

I had to try many harnesses before finding one that my cat could not escape from. It is specially made for her (loooong body!), extra wide and very comfortable. It is tight! But she is so used to it that she don´t notice it, or let it stop her from chasing bugs, birds, other cats and the neighbors dogs...... She is very energetic, ver y nose, and gets bored very easily. So I have to go for walks twice a day to keep her happy. She chases, plays, stalks and climbs trees. I use a flexi-leash 5 m long, and that gives her quite some room to be a cat. Why not try the harness indoors for a while, to make sure that she can't get out of it? But I do see the worry about her safety, about her former living situation......

Do you have the possibility to build shelves for her to climb? Do you have a floor to roof cat tree? Have you tried Da Bird? Many cats go crazy for that toy...... mine included. I have different attachments for that wand, since she easily gets bored wit her toys- I hid them for month , and then it is as new! 

I hide treats and food all over the house, to make her hunt for food. She also gets bones to gnaw on, to keep her mind occupied and to make her work for her food. 

Mine is half siamese- long, lean, curios, fast, energetic. I guess yours has a long and lean body as well?

I forgot to mention blowing bubbles.  My cats love to chase them, pop, them, and even just to watch them float through the air.  Its relaxing for me to.  I think it has to do with all the deep breathing.  Dollar General has some scented bubbles... Tatiana can hear me open the lid, but Snowy cant, but she can smell them, and she will come to play when she smells them.  They like it when the bubbles land on the wall, the screen, or  a plant without popping.

Still haven’t solved the boredom problem.  She’s a “teenager” now. So I also don’t know how much of this is her just being moody, or more cat less kitten. I notice she no longer likes to socialize as much unless it’s directly for food or play. She’s affection to me, but not as much. She doesn’t sit on anyone’s chest anymore. No one’s told her no, she just doesn’t. I’m also trying to figure out if she’s chunky or not. She likes to follow you into a room and then flop on the floor. That’s her thing. Just flop on the floor. She’s not interesting in much else. If she’s in a room too long, he’ll wait by flopping on the floor. It’s as if sitting or standing is too much effort. She’s being fed Hill’s Science Diet Optimal Care Adult Cat food. Only thing she’s had since Animal Control. We do feed her cans. She begs for a small can in the morning and one at night. About the most talkative and interactive she gets anymore. When we’re trying to play with her if she gets frustrated, she’ll go to a scratching post and scratch it off before flopping back to the floor.  I have found though that when she does play, we’ve started doing puzzles. No more running around the house chasing a mousie like a crazy idiot. I’ve been putting the mousie in bottles like an older style single serving milk bottle or Starbucks Frappuccino bottle. Sometimes the mousie will end up in a clothes hamper, quilt rack, tub without water, tub with a little water, plastic bag, high place, whatever. And she has to figure out how to get it. It’s on the only game currently that keeps the tail erect after catching, keeps her interest, and keeps her engaged as she tried to figure out the puzzle.

I used to have a computer program  years and years ago when my kids were little.. it was basically like a screen save, except anytime a key was pushed, something would pop up on the screen, a squiggle, or a bubble.  The bubbles would grow until they popped and the squiggles just floated around.  you could push certain buttons like b for a blue ballloon, but specifics were not required.  I wonder if she would like something like that?  Maybe a fish tank?  They have treat toys to encourage her to play... we use the temptations treat mouse and the new friskies one where inside gets crunchy treats, and then they have "strings" that you put through holes in the top for his ears.  Both are always empty when I get home from work.  I also have one of those abacus type toys for children where you can push the beads along the wire, kind of like a maze, but both ends of the wires are attached to a block of wood, so the beads never come off, but you can spin them around and push them from one end to the other.  I think it is a little too difficult for my cats though, and it doesn't spit out a treat so unless I am playing with it, I think they loose interst.
