Hi. My cat has been having some problems, been to two vets and nothing is helping. Appreciate if anyone who had this problem, could help out.
  1. First sign was blood on the floor, discovered he pulled the hair and licked his paw bloody. Applied iodine to disinfect
  2. Saw first vet, given amoxycillin tablet, baneocin powder. Was unsuccessful in feeding amoxycillin tablet as he would try his best to spit it out.
  3. As he managed to escape the cone of shame a few times, he licked his paws bloody again, I decided to see 2nd vet.
  4. 2nd vet gave injection of Convenia and prednisone, told to apply fraximine on foot. Did tape test and fungal culture test.
  5. He managed to lick his paws bloody again, and I found new rashes on his inner thigh. I applied fraximine on them, they continued to spread to a larger area over the next few days. They looked like pimples/acne.
  6. I tried to use chlorhexidine to soak his paw, did not seem to improve much. I used it on his chin acne, seemed to have improvements.
  7. Noticed fur in another paw have turned brown, seems like there are signs of infection spreading to the other paw.
  8. Vet reviewed one week later and said its suspected to be cocci with a bit of yeast although fungal cultures results were negative. Given one shot of Chlorpheniramine. Given a MiconaHex+Triz shampoo to wash his body twice a week for two weeks, Epi-otic Skin and ear cleanser to clean his paw daily, and Dermotic ear & skin suspension to apply to the paw.
  9. Instructed to give children’s liquid Zyrtec twice a day for a week then once a day, to stop fraximine for the paw.
  10. No signs of recovery so far 5 weeks into treatment. So I stopped the demotic lotions. And have just used the shampoo to spot apply the area, sit for ten minutes, clean it, then apply coconut oil and used silver spray for the areas. Noticed very VERY slow improvements.
  11. Bought a liquid bandage spray and pet allergy supplements to try. Improved some more, but by now it had spread to two other paws. My latest method is to spot apply with the shampoo, let it sit for ten minutes, clean with warm water, apply silver spray, apply liquid bandage.
  12. The first paw's condition is slowly improving, meaning less brown discharge, but still there. But the other two paws look bad now.
  13. He still has chin acne and is possibly aggravated by the fact he had been living in the cone of shame since the problem started. He also has brown discharge on his nose bridge...
  14. I've changed his food to avoid possible allergens like grains, chicken, turkey, salmon. Nothing is helping to get rid of this persistent problem. I've spend equivalent of £250 on vets and it didnt help.
Please help 🙏🏼

Can you ask for a liquid version of the amoxycillin since you couldn't do the pills? Maybe it's an allergy to his litter since it's on the feet? Can you tape socks on his feet to stop the licking?

Welcome to The Cat Site! I am sorry that I don't have a lot of ideas for you. You may have a very good vet; I am not criticizing him; however, do you have any access to a specialist in animal dermatology? It sounds as if your vet is trying one thing after another, nothing is working, and now your poor cat has chin acne ( from cone probably as you say) but he also has a patch on his nose. I am not seeing a lot of diagnostic measures, not that I am trying to spend your money, but you have spent a lot already. The OP never came back after a few month on TCS in 2015, so they won't reply more than likely.

Hi, thanks, maybe I should do amoxicillin again, I tried to bandage in the early days, and it swelled up, so don't think bandage is safe. 😓

If it swelled, then you had it too tight. Buy some baby socks and put medical tape around the top (not on the fur) just tight enough that he can't walk or kick it off.

You can also try a vet wrap type bandage which might let you control the tightness a little bit. I use the top of athletic sock, cut off, on the elbows of my GSD with vet wrap to hold them in place.

It looked like the bacteria in the area multiplied which caused the swelling actually.. So im not sure if I should bandage again

I don't think we have a animal dermotologist around here, I hope someone who had experience in treating this can share their experiences.. 😢🙏🏼

I would try another vet
He may need antibiotics
My cat had this once not as bad but he took clavimox and I cleaned with vetricyn spray gel and iodine daily

if the pills are hard due to taste cut them and put them in a gelatin capsule- i buy mine off amazon

you can also find a pill shooter/dispenser to help you get the pill at the very back of the throat so he swallows asap

did you try masking the pill in greenies, pill pockets or butter/cheese something yummy he likes?
