A little less than 2 years ago I came to this site to seek help and info on how to care for and socialize a cat we had adopted from a cat colony from FL.(we live in MI). He was behind a condo we had rented for a week stay and he had gotten somewhat friendly with me while feeding the cats and he reminded us both of our Gunther who we had lost a year and half prior. We told the TNR folks that if they caught him we would adopt him - 2 months later came the call. I hired a transport company to bring him to MI. I had little to zero experience with a cat from a colony - I had cats all along but barn cats, kittens etc and socialized cats. . What I had on my hands was one very angry, very big and very unhappy hissing spitting cat. He terrified me and he took his vengence out on my husband Both Kwik and Fionasmom gave me tips and encouragement (which I really needed) as he scared the heck out of me. Bit by bit their suggestions took hold (I was still afraid of him, him less afraid of me). He made attempts to investigate our home and for whatever reason the dishwasher become his main hang out area when I was in the kitchen cooking or cleaning. I don't know if the sound reminded him of the waves from where he had lived (about 85 feet from the ocean in the cat colony) or it was just that he was tired of the bedroom he was in. We got to deal with our littlest cat Heathen being a terror and chasing poor Buddy back upstairs and under the bed. Not content with terrorizing him she would also steal his toy mouse - they never tusseled although Buddy could have just laid a big paw on her and pinned her down. He's at least twice her size. Bit by bit he would come to where I was at. I would hand feed him treats but I was still afraid to touch him. Finally he started pushing my hand with his head while I was feeding him treats. Kwik told me to quit being a chicken and just pet him. Took me a while but I did and then he started rubbing himself all around me while I sat on the floor. Fionasmom encouraged and I petted him a bit more- but pretty sure he knew I wasn't sure. He took the lead and laid his head on my lap. Now I refer to him as my "dawg" he follows me everywhere, he does cat tricks like lay down, beg, give me the paw and is a total and complete Mama's boy. He has made up for his behavior with my husband and often goes to him with loud Meows for petting. But without Fionasmom and Kwik I would have probably been looking for transporter to send him back to FL. I cannot thank these two ladies for their help, guidance and patience with my hestitancy with Buddy - Thank you both - I now have a perfect loving "dawg"... Thank you.
