stay the course for now and see how she does.
Sound advice and words of wisdom...... taking each day as it comes

He lived 4 years and did not die of melanoma.
F FeralHearts -be encouraged, stay positive-it's funny but the things we worry about the most usually don't happen how we imagine they will.....I don't believe anyone can predict "how long or how short"( not the most brilliant minds)

My Grandpa used to tell a funny story when he was diagnosed with Lou Gherig disease and his Dr told him he should stop smoking.... firstly in his broken English he said" Why? cigarettes no killa mi- Lou Gherig is!"

Then he went on to say he had a good friend Joe who stopped smoking but the cigarettes killed him anyway! He said Joe crossed the street one day and BAM got ran over by a Marlboro truck!

It was his strange way of saying no one is guaranteed tomorrow, everyday is a GIFT❤

Thank you for sharing... I'm so saddened to hear the bad news and tears coming out of my eyes 😢 but there's every hope she can live for years to come!

It's probably too soon but have you considered supplements like these? If the vet says they are safe to give BH, you might want to give it a try.

Also homeopathy is one of the most complementary therapies used by people with cancer if there's holistic vets near you.

Poor baby girl... I hope she will feel better soon. She's in great hands

Very true BUT you've got to be very careful that what is intended for cell regeneration does not feed mutated cells or what contradicts many meds.....it can be very tricky, due diligence much needed in researching all specifics

Personally I do the holistic route for both myself and " animals " when I'm about as sure as I can be that it's safe and without risk

For example " Chaga mushrooms"- cats with kidney or bladder issues should not take medicinal mushrooms - too high in oxalates for extended use or high enough dosages to be beneficial.... too much to consider though it's believed to be beneficial for many diseases including cancer

Common side effects are upset stomach and diarrhea but may cause more serious side effects such as lack of appetite, vomiting ,weakness and jaundice'- Id stay clear of that one

Animals have difficulty digesting mushrooms and raw they can be toxic.....It's so weird how so many products sold FOR pets can be unsafe

Well, that really sucks, for lack of a better word. I am sorry. Has anyone discussed your seeing an oncologist? I am not recommending it, just curious.

Situations like this are devastating. Try as hard as you can to be objective when assessing how she is doing. You will know better how she is doing than anyone else. Just be sure not to stifle your true intuition of how she feels with a narrative that is less painful.

I am not trying to be anything but supportive, but also don’t want to encourage any false hope that could lead to suffering.

I’ve done it. I am sure most people have done it, who have had loved ones with terminal disease processes. We want so much to keep them with us and for them to be “okay” that we start to alter reality in our minds, yet deep down we really know the truth.

I don’t think you are doing that now. Just something to keep in mind.

Ivd worked in the animal health care field for decades. I have done it with my own cat.

Rusty had numerous health issues and renal failure, CRF. Vet visits were stressful and through work I was able to keep him going for a long time with daily fluids and medications. About 3 years in, I was proud of myself that he was still alive. I talked with the vet often about him and it was almost a joke how I could keep him alive. But, she hadn’t seen him in a long time.

I knew he was skinny. I knew he couldn’t be happy. I knew he must have been suffering but I couldn’t accept that. Not then. His condition was terminal and I knew. But I just kept him going. He would still get up on the couch with me when I got home from work. He mostly slept. He had gotten very thin. It wasn’t until my BF said that he was afraid Rusty would die while I wasn’t home. ( I always have worked allot) that I realized Ihad been deceiving myself.

When I took him in to be euthanized that Sunday, I saw the momentary look of shock and perhaps horror in my vets eyes when I took him out of the carrier. It was a feeling I wouldn’t wish on anyone. A feeling I have never before had but will in d sad one aspect remain with me always.

Rusty tried to play with the fish in the fish tank after his initial pain injection. Then he slowly drifted to sleep while I was talking to the vet. When the final injection was given, I saw his ( hard to explain or describe) lift up and leave his body. It was s feeling of such relief and escape from his prison of a body. I wish I could describe it better. But, I knew he was at peace and free.

I am only telling you the above because I want you to be aware.

I do know you will do what’s best for your cat. And I am not saying anything about your cats treatment etc. just relaying what happened to me, so perhaps you can find some useful things to consider at a later day. Just to be aware of the way we can distort what is going on.

I am truly sorry for that report. I wish it was different.

I can certainly ask the vet and see what she says. Sadly no holistic vets anywhere near me. In fact, I think we only have three holistic people docs in the area.

Yes, I was actually told off, nicely, when I was treating Mia and tried one as I was desperate and panicking as no one seemed to be trying to helping her IMHO. I was convinced I did her more hard but the oncologist said no it didn't do her any harm. I was relieved and won't try anything like that again before talking to her Doc.

Like Cranberries. While the D-mannose is good, which is in cranberries, cats can't digest cranberries and they are everywhere in things now. All these pet food manufacturers are going by "trends" and making them "people" approved - no grains fro example - instead of looking at what these fur babies need. It makes me nuts.

Agree 100%- makes me crazy too.....just have to be extra careful and when you have a trusted Vet,discuss it with them

My own primary oncology specialist is the first to say he doesn't know enough about xxx or not enough data on xxx or yea or nay ---- so I'd not do anything different with my furries as I do for myself.....I know you are extra diligent so I don't worry about you with those things👍

Actually, her Doc wants to talk to one. I couldn't understand why she wanted to when she gave me the news and told me it wasn't treatable. In my head I was questioning it, but I trusted her enough to go with it.

After reading the report I understand why she wants to speak with one. I don't think we will get a different answer, but it may help us to understand, and perhaps help another kitty in the future should they cross paths with her Doc. Experiences, even horrific ones still teach us - even through pain and wishing so hard we didn't have to learn it.

I agree and 110% appreciate what you are saying. It said out of kindness. XO

This is the hard part - knowing when it's time, and if I'm honest with myself I think it might be close right now.

The only reason I've not brought in yet to let her go is that I want to see how she does after healing. It was major what she went through. She's drugged and on very exhausting antibiotics. I can't tell if it is those, or the illness right now. We've come this far so staying the course is worth it right now. IMHO

I can say that her Jaundice seems to have gotten a bit worse. I would have expected it to slightly improve by now. That's not a good sign IMHO. Then again, her liver has just been majorly assaulted too. I feel like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. It's why I'm staying the course for now.

She tried to eat treats yesterday and tried to eat this morning... I was surprised. So there was a positive.

I completely understand that and I'm so deeply sorry you experienced it.

I remember with Mia, I was the same. It's one of my deepest pains that I've not recovered from. I had arranged to let her go on the Friday, but honestly, in my heart, I was thinking "Now her Doc will have to look at her and not brush her off. and help her" Which is how I felt. On the Wednesday she did not look well. I called and we were to see her Doc at 3 pm. I felt the same way still. An hour before we left I watched her turn so fast and in my heart I questioned if we'd even make it there in time. Still, my heart kept hope right up until the end.

I lost her in the parking lot at the vet's office. It was not the end she deserved. I will carry all that happened to her with me forever.

What we had were harsh lessons. Ones I'm sure both of us wished we never had to learn - and one I am hoping not to repeat.

I am truly sorry for that report. I wish it was different.
Thank you XO.

...and this is the other reason I'm staying the course right now.

I had to come into the office today so I put her in my room to be safe away from Charlie. I shut the drapes and made everything nice and comfy for her. She's got some gaba in her to keep her comfortable. I thought she'd sleep.

The camera goes off. I look. The little minx used every ounce of determination she had - and with total grace - hopped up from the bed to the dresser, and then onto the window ledge to watch the outside world. She's been up there for an hour and a half now.

She is a puzzle and a Brave soul.

Update for you all and treatment plans.

First bandage check and change. Doc says it looks good. YAY!

She did speak to an oncologist to try to get a prognosis and see about any plausible treatments options. Neither resulted it what she didn't already know but bless her for trying.

Culture and Sensitivity came back on the liver - no infection. We are still assuming one since of course a biopsy is a small part of the whole.

She is still wandering around and being mostly like her old self. Basking in the sun and walking up the steps I have for her, light jump actually, to the different sun and windows spots she likes.

She tried to eat on her own today, she did a few licks and tried treats - still nothing really to write home about.

Her bulibrin numbers skyrocketed. From 99 to 250. The rest is the same as last week - high - but not higher. According to her surgeon, Dr M, this is often normal after everything she's been through and should go down in time. Liver failure numbers are okay. Kidney values -ok.

Still pretty jaundiced, but finally pooping normal and a normal color since I started adding the lactulose.

Feeding right now is still through a gastro tube. I image this will continue for quite some time.

These are the list of the meds:

Zentonil -once a day 100mg
Clavamox - Twice a day and continuing for a month
Veraflox -Once a day. I meant to ask if we are continuing this after we are finished but I don't think so.
Gabapentin - Twice a day / as needed
Buprenorphine - twice a day - probably just another day or two of this
Lactulose - 1ml once a day (twice if needed)
Cernia - this one is only as needed as it can be harder on the liver processing. ATM we are stopping to see how she does without it.
Mirtazapine - Right now not being used. It's on the side just in case a time comes.

I had asked about Urdosil for her and it's not a good option because of her bile ducts.

These are the ones we are adding:

Prednisolone - 10Mg per ML 0.5ml twice a day
Vit B12 shot - 1000 mcg/ml 0.25 once a week for 4 weeks and then once a month. (at home)(I guess Charlie's Cartrophen shots helped prep the way for that. Bless Nurse A for teaching me the ways so I am able to do this for her and for all of them considering the $ aspect as well.)

There was an option, I have declined it with the blessing of her Doc and I'll will explain why.

Essentially Liver resection surgery. I had read about it before we spoke today. It's major and the outcomes are usually not great, complex and risky. Many die on the table. The likelihood is that it's already in other spots. The risk vs reward on this treatment seems simply like a bad idea.

Apparently we did catch this early and I did say out loud - I would hate to see what finding this late looked like. Now we're pretty sure she has more contributing to this too which makes it a bit worse... but still.

Focus for me IMHo is on her quality of life. Having her live the best life she can for as long as she can.

Thank you for sharing. My heart goes out to you :frown:

You originally mentioned that you noticed her eating less and less, but how long had that been going on for?

Thank you. It's heartbreaking beyond heartbreaking. I'll do everything I Can for her and medicine is not an exact science - so - there's always room for hope.

The short version of your question is only a couple of weeks - but - Braveheart was always a light eater and will go on and off food. I have to rotate to manage that.

Two weeks before this all began I noticed she was eating a bit less. I thought she was in a finicky mood again but and she was looking a bit thinner too. So I weighed her - and here was my biggest mistake... I usually weight them all once a month. When Mia (her sister) died last year, I had, and still have, issues dealing with her passing. Though it's improved - the grief was / is really bad with her. Since all the fur babies have issues I still monitored them well with the help of the cameras (yes there are camera all over their food areas and litter areas) but what I failed to do was weight them. This becomes more important than one night think.

When I weighed her she was near 2 pounds down. Cursed at myself and called the vet right away.

I didn't think it was an ER situation as this is typical of her with her food. The behavior was not out of sync. She does tend to gain and loss weight as well, and since I had not being weighing them, I really couldn't determine how quickly the weight had gone. Again - entirely my fault - and one I won't repeat.

I did what I would normally do if I don't think it's urgent. I made an appointment for two weeks. Normally this gives me time to assess them and see what's up. If it looks bad I call and we go in sooner, or it resolves itself. Keep in mind I have three not well cats so I'm used to these struggles and having to guage things otherwise I might have them in every week.

A few days before I brought her in she really started with the poor eating. This time in an unusual way. I weighed her again and she was down near another half a pound. Now I know she's in trouble. (And this is why we should weight cats frequently and why it was such an epic fail on my part that I didn't.)

Two days later was her appointment. It would be a Monday.

On Monday the 19th of August she had her Doc visit first thing in the morning . All looked well fairly well at that appointment - minus this weight loss. Blood and urine were drawn.

Tuesday - and that's when that's first set of bloodwork came back high on the liver numbers and strange urine etc. We decide on an ultrasound to see what was going on. She has a history or gastroenteritis and pancreatitis.

At this point because of things that transpired last year I asked her Doc if an Internist might be the better way to go:
1. Due to last year. (That's another story and has to do with her sister Mia and things that transpired. BH was brought in right after her passing for an ultrasound for something similar to what she was now doing again - only this time - a little worse.)
2. Allowing for a specialist to look at her live rather than a third party interpreting. We decided yes, this was probably the better route to go.

Wednesday - She stopped eating entirely and barely drinking.

Thursday -Between wednesday late night and Thursday she had stopped eating and drinking all together - and the one thing -she is a good drinker. That's never been an issue ever. That red flagged the helk out me me and my gut was just screaming. I felt in deep in being.

I called her vet. She needed help. Now. Waiting for an internist weeks from now was not a good option IMHO. In her vets defense the numbers did not suggest a crash this quickly and suggested we had some time. In the back of my mind I could see the vet thought I might be being over protective and honesty that was a fair call on her part as the science would suggest that to be exactly the case. Bless her though - she told me to follow my gut. I'm so glad she encouraged that - and then went as far as her and Nurse A to fight to find a place to bring her to for that help. In spite of the science.

By Thursday night she was in the ER over 2 hours away that had an internist that would see her and a place capable of managing things. (The ER here - no offense to them - is more like an after hours vet clinic these days. Helpful absolutely, but she needed more andI could feel that.)

By Friday she was in rough shape with numbers above 700 ALT. Over double what they were that Monday, just four days prior. Things had skyrocketed.

So pretty fast things went downhill.

Thank you for going into details 🙏 One of my kitties sometimes goes on a hunger strike since she was a year old but still eats treats or commercial wet food, so I was curious about how BH's recent event unfolded. I now weigh my kitties regularly and even got my hand on a used urine chemistry analyzer for licensed vets on ebay for biweekly urinalysis at home. Seeing how stressful each trip to the vet is for cats, I've been reluctant to do that more than twice a year but now I feel like I should get their blood tested and an ultrasound every quarter, and urine analyzed each month...

Sounds like your regular vet people really care about you and went the extra mile ❤ I'm glad BH got the attention she needed right away before this progressed to the ugly stage... And I'm with you - there's always room for hope. Wandering around the house is promising too. Hang in there, stay strong.

You're welcome.

What you're going through is exactly why I share; so that it can help others. Even if it's scary. My heart goes out to you but you are doing a great job!

Cats are really hard to read. Even harder if maybe it's someone's first cat. They may not know some subtle signs or how fast things can go from not good to urgent.

I'm so glad you weigh yours and what a brilliant thing that you were able to get your hands on a way to do some urinalysis from home!

I don't want to assume, so I will ask. Have you been made aware of the wonders of Gabapentin for stress?

Absolutely, they have been outstanding in every way I could ask and then some. They are really fighting for her. Truly a blessing.

Thanks. We are trying. Even through the exhaustion. One day - one step. :)

It's so true about the first timers. I was just remembering the early days when one of our kitties started peeing on the bed. I suspected the male kitten and took him to the vet but I later found out the culprit was his sister  I didn't know anything about cats back then, so possible underlying illness or stress didn't even occur to me. If the same thing were to happen now, I'd get the urinalysis done right away. Also, the vets in Australia don't typically run a blood test on a routine, annual visit. They didn't even do that when they diagnosed my boy with FIC. If I could go back in time, I would ask for a blood test and full body scan once a year in addition to regular urinalysis. Cats are difficult... they hide pain so well until they can't take it anymore, and there are still so many things about them that experts in the field haven't figured out.

Yes! We got gabapentin stocked in the kitty box. I recently took one of them to the vet and she didn't meow at all in the car, though she was fully awake and loud in the consultation room.

Has BH's appetite improved a little?

I am happy to report - yes, it has. She ate a bit this morning on her on and again this afternoon. Plus two treats last night.

Not a lot but it is progress. :) I think the pred has a lot to do with that.

I did have to bring her to the Doc today as the little minx is more active and wiggle off her bandage right dead centre if her surgery stitches. *sigh* They kindly rebandaged her up. No damage done. *PHEW*

More good news: She is looking less jaundiced and her pee a lot less bright yellow. Her surgeon agreed. WEEEEE. She needs to keep this up.

They do like to protest!

I'm glad you have a stash of gaba. It's so helpful in many situations

Cats are difficult... they hide pain so well until they can't take it anymore, and there are still so many things about them that experts in the field haven't figured out.
It's amazing how much you have to learn and keep learning.

They do know how to suck back pain for sure. Makes it so hard for us.

I am so with you on the full body scan!!! Needs to be routine. I know that sounds crazy but from what I have learned and seen - it would probably save a lot of these stubborn souls.

That's wonderful news!!🧡 Treats are a must :purr:

They do like to protest!

I'm glad you have a stash of gaba. It's so helpful in many situations

Edit to add: She's eating a bit on her own and last night and this morning. It's still not much but she is trying. I am so sure the Pred is the reason.

Interesting thing. With Lactulose her poop is normal. Without it - Tootsie rolls and dark.

Yes... the demands of treats must be met!

Absolutely. I wish it did.

Bless them as they didn't charge me for that.

I'm grateful they are trying to find ways to save some money. As with three lemon furballs - it can get tough to be able to make sure they have what they need.

I'm lucky in some way as I'm not the "keeping up with the Jones" type. Food, roof, clothes type of soul here - and that is a blessing in itself since so many can't even do that.
