I’m working on putting together an outdoor shelter for a feral cat I’ve been feeding for a few months. I’m looking for suggestions about the best kind of straw bedding that I can buy online. Any particular brands anyone likes to use?

. Just get whatever is cheapest. You do want long strands, not chopped straw, though. And you definitely want STRAW, not hay; hay will get moldy. What online options are you considering?
It's usually best to source straw locally if possible. This time of year most hardware stores have it for Halloween/harvest decorations. Also, Tractor Supply sells a compressed bale that's pretty good.

I don’t think it’s the most comfortable compared to soft bedding, but the advantages tend to outweigh that slight negative and most cats seem to take to it fine.
I don't know why it would. Granted, getting poked by the end of a strand isn't the nicest feeling, but once you have it all tamped down it's really very cozy.

Straw is smooth, not pokey. Some kinds of hay are pokey though. But straw is like drinking straws (presumably why they call them that, lol)----smooth and hollow. That's why it holds heat so well.Just a thought
