Before I take her to the vet..

..my beautiful sweet calico Samantha is 6 yrs old & 13 lbs. She has in the past exhibited this behavior only every now and then and I didn't think too much about it, but lately she does this several times a day every day. After carefully watching what's going on with her, I can see the fur on her hips twitching as if it's a muscle spasm. She immediately starts licking the area very hard (no biting at all) and she'll do this on either hip all the while twitching her tail. Then she'll get up and run out of the room and back in again. She does not exhibit any pain and doesn't look uncomfortable as if it might be painful. Has anyone seen this behavior or have a clue what it might be?

This could be nothing at all, just your cat being a cat. However, it sounds like it might be the beginning stages of Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome, too.

Thank you for that info, the description sounds exactly like what she is doing. I'm relieved that this is not painful or life threatening.
