Balki will be 6 months old on Wednesday. I am very proud of how he's turning out. Despite a few missteps on both of our parts, he's becoming a sweet, sensitive, well mannered little puppy. His recall has improved by leaps and bounds, and he's learning what is and isn't his to chew on or play with. He's taken to seeking me out if something scares or upsets him. When I call him over, he gallops over to me, turns to the side and "leans" on my legs. If I get down on the ground, eye level with him, he zips over to me with his little ears back and tail wagging and showers me with little puppy kisses.
In many ways, he reminds me of Tag, and a good example is if Tag saw me with a "poker face", he'd stop in his tracks and watch me as if he was wondering why I looked so upset. Balki is the same. Livie is not like this at all, so I'm going to have to get used to this trait once again.
Unfortunately he's not as advanced as I was hoping (my fault, due to work etc.), but, he does understand sit, down (verbal and hand signals), recall, "drop it" (out), and back up. Ever since he was a tiny brand new puppy, he'd walk backwards if I moved towards him. He's very good at it and I took advantage of it and started putting it on cue. He can really hustle backwards and it's very cute to see. His nicknames are "Baby Boy", "Bouncing Baby Balki Boys", "Hey Ding Dong" (if he's doing something naughty) and my favorite, "Fat Butt." When he was a baby, he'd hustle around the house like he was Mr. Important with that fat little puppy butt with all that puppy fur sticking out. When he runs up the stairs, he does so with such insane concentration and intensity he reminds me of a cartoon character. He'll use so much energy to move 2 inches, and I'll say "Let's go, little Fat Butt!" and he hustles up the stairs.
Work calms down considerably in late September, and I'm making a training plan for the winter months. One thing he doesn't seem to understand is "stay" or "wait", and we'll be working on that and a few other things.
The best part is, Livie and now BOTH of the cats just love him. He's incredibly polite with the cats, but he can't help but give everyone a free face wash several times a day. Lila playfully grabbed him around the neck one day and "bit" (without hurting him, he didn't make a peep) him on the neck. She took him down like a pro wrestler but did it so gently it was almost laughable. He got up and immediately started kissing her face and she gave him the most pathetic slap (more like a tap) and walked away.
Oh, and wonderful news...the housebreaking mistakes are pretty much a thing of the past. He's starting to alert me when he needs to go outside. And if he's in his ex pen, or I'm very tied up and can't get to him right away, he seems to understand that his litter/pee pad box is where he needs to go. He's also been holding it all night, despite having access to a potty box so this is good news all around.

Wow- 6 months already?!!!Seems like yesterday you were anxiously awaiting his arrival! How time flies

Such an adorable little boy,so attentive and a quick study- he's progressing wonderfully - a nice pat on the back to you,gratifying- isn't it?

He's just the perfect addition to the family- so good to hear BOTH Lila and Sarah love him so much...and Livie of course

I'm not sure if you have a clowder of puppies or a pack of kitties so probably safe to say a herd of puppycats?

A very Happy 6 month Birthday to a pawsitively precious pup. :heartshape: He looks so sweet and innocent in his bed surrounded by all the toys. He's not too spoiled, is he?

According to him it's flat out neglect. How dare I provide only 26 toys when obviously he needs 27? 🤣

Balki is just over 7 months and is doing great! He has seemingly learned that going outside to potty is preferable, but the litter boxes are a great emergency back up. I ended up removing the ex pen in the kitchen. He was peeing next to the new "bigger" litter box (he didn't like it, apparently) and I was tired of tripping over it. He now has one in the living room, and that's where "his box" is. He's doing 100% better this way. It's been quite awhile since he's had an accident. He's taken to alerting me to go out by going to the door and scratching at it, something my other dogs have never done. He'll also start pacing the house and start trotting around faster and faster if I don't hear him at the door, so, he definitely lets me know. And if I don't get around to letting him out, he will literally run to his litter box to relieve himself. Much more preferable than an accident by the door or on the living room rug. I'm very proud of him!
We have started baby dog agility stuff....low jumps, mostly, and he loves the tunnel which he was introduced to at 10 weeks old. We are not sequencing obstacles together yet, but he loves showing off. He's too young to start serious weave pole training, but he watches Livie zip through the 12 in the yard and his head bobs back and forth, following her pattern as she races through them. It's really cute. His recall is also going well, and I've called him off of meeting other friendly dogs (through a fence, of course), which for a 7 month old puppy is pretty darned good IMO.
He also has let me know he finds being carried very demeaning. When I pick him up, he's fine, but if I carry him much more than a few steps his ears go back, he curls up into my body, and crams his head into my neck or arm pit. It's like he's absolutely humiliated! Tag did the same thing, and found being carried "baby stuff" and disliked it. (Livie OTOH loves it, and thinks it's the way a Princess ought to be treated.)
Lila is definitely learning to like him. Sarah is pretty much in love with him and will approach him, flop on her side, and play bite his legs. He'll stand there, ears back, and wait for a chance to dart away. When he does, Sarah rolls and flops on the ground and he darts in and gives her a free ear wash. The dynamics between these four is just really cute.
He's also getting quite a fluffy little coat. And it's getting redder! He's almost as red as Livie at this point. It needs little grooming, and repels dirt easily. Consequently, he's only had a few baths. He will be getting a few more "water baths" (no shampoo) and drying as a training exercise. The last time I gave him a bath, about a week ago, was nothing but drama. He was trying to climb me the entire time, and cramming his head in the corner when I was trying to dry him. So that's our next big adventure.
I love my crazy little puppy no matter what. ❤ Slowly but surely, he's helping me heal from losing Tag.

Enjoy an over abundance of photos from the last month or so.

He's also getting much better in the car. He can hang onto his dignity by dozing rather than climbing the crate and looking like he's going to perish at any moment.

This may be my favorite photo of Balki and Livie together to date.

Thank you so much for the picture overload, it was just what I needed for a sleepy Sunday morning. :yess: Balki is beyond precious and your diligent training is obviously paying off. Can't wait to hear more in the months ahead about his agility triumphs. Recall was one of the hardest skills I had with our last dog. He was so smart and did great at obedience training but obviously had a somewhat independent nature. ;) Love the pic of Balki and Livie together too. :heartshape: It would make a great Christmas or holiday card.
