Hi furriends,

So my cat Krypto has had issues with bald spots. He has usually has one on each outer hind leg near his bum. And his belly is bald but varies in patchiness. They get better then worse and they seem to continuously change.
I brought him to the vet in the summer and the dr seemed to think it was fleas. I thought this was weird because Larry my other cat has none of these symptoms. So he was on 6 months of flea treatment (both cats). It seemed to help I thought. But still Krypto is still over grooming those areas.

The vet tested his stool and they ruled out any parasites as well. They suggested changing food in case of allergies and still no help. His bald spots are still bothering me. I’m thinking it’s anxiety possibly. I would bring him back to the vet but they just keep thinking it’s fleas even though there is no proof of fleas on him. Only the bald patches.

He is a happy kitty and very loved.
Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can do?

What brand are you feeding?

3 out of 5 of my cats have this issue, they been on flea preventive since march ,as soon as my cats hair comes back they seem to develop new spots one of the cats I have I caught her pulling her fur, I'm trying to figure out the cause for my 3 as well

The cats I have had in the passed with balding issues was caused by various reasons like food allergies/sensitivity, Fleas, lack of omegas fixed b th adding in their diet, lack of a nutrient when added sea meal seamed to help, anxiety , shampoo etc sensitivity when switched to a hypoallergenic shampoo it helped,

I'm just stumped on these current 3 of mine because the omegas ,sea meal , don't seem to help these 3, going to try a different food when I get paid, I do have a shampoo that does seem to help,
also I noticed if I brush or comb the cats at least 3 times a week helps I think its because its helping remove dry skin flakes that is stopping the hair growth,

But each cat is different maybe yours is having a food sensitivity or lacking in something or he just needs a hypoallergenic shampoo to sooth it ,I can provide the shampoo picture if you are interested in it, I got it off of chewy

Sorry if I wasn't much help

I'm sorry to hear your cat, Krypto, is having this problem. There are other types of allergies besides food, e.g. environmental, (dust, pollen, mold, etc.). Since this has been an on-going occurrence you may want to consider consulting with a veterinary dermatology specialist. Here is how you can find one with your location:
acvd.org | Find Dermatologist | Veterinarians with specialized training in skin, ears, and allergy

This Article which discusses the different types of skin conditions in cats might also have some helpful information for you:

Such a pretty little guy! If you feel that your vet is not listening to you, you might want to think about changing vets. Ask for recommendations from family, friends, and co workers. I agree with all of the above; if you feel that the root is anxiety another vet may be more helpful if it comes down to treating that. Do you see a cause for anxiety with Krypto?

I appreciate any help thank you. I am feeding Royal Canin satiety support weight management. Wet and dry. I have bathed him before but not often because it’s so difficult and he despises it. How often can I bathe him?and I’d love shampoo suggestions.

Very true could be environmental allergies. Unfortunately I’m Canadian can’t use that website but taking him back to the vet could help maybe I can ask for a referral.
Thank you for your help!

Well he and my other cat can be territorial at home. And even territorial over me. But he’s the bigger guy and when they fight he’s the clear winner. So I’m stumped as I don’t know everything about their behaviour.

That web site also has a list of Canadian veterinary dermatologists: acvd.org | Home | Veterinarians with specialized training in skin, ears, and allergy

An allergy to an ingredient in food or even to cat litter can cause bald spots in cats.

Is there a reason why you feed that particular brand and formula? Royal Canin isn't considered a very good brand because of the fillers. For weight issues, the easiest way to keep your cat at a good weight is too feed the appropriate amount of calories daily and provide plenty of play time. Weight specific foods are not necessary at all.

The vet recommended it for their weight at their last visit. Ugh maybe they are just trying to scam me. So frustrating.
