You're right of course, but he was born in Dublin, in 1847 and worked as a civil servant until 1878. I would love to read some of his other stories. Incidentally, the Catholic and Protestant Churches at the time were extremely similar, at least in their practices and attitudes to women.
Yep, not much to choose between them, then. I know of one other of Stoker’s books, The Lair of the White Worm x apparently it’s absolutely dire. Wikipedia says “The book is widely considered one of the worst books ever written” and even has citations! 😄

Project Gutenburg has 14 books by Bram Stoker (though Dracula is there more than once)

The Lair of the White Worm has only been downloaded 248 times, compared to Dracula's 16,263. So that might be an indication of how popular it is.

Lady Athlyne has even fewer downloads. Per Wiki, that one is a romance. :)
