:doh2: It was Thai curries. I get mad at myself when I think about it and, more importantly, I put my baby through Hell. Kitty is not allowed to eat any human food now and she knows it. Well, except for a couple tiny pieces of ham which she was ready to fight me over. I don't eat that in front of her anymore. :petcat:
Good thing it wasnt Indian curries- or you have a pollock styled redecoration due to explosive diarrhea.

I dont feed my cat human food, so he doesnt bug me when I eat.

I wonder if she checked for cancer diagnosis on the blood work. It has to be ordered separately. If she is not willing to tell what she suspects is cancer, without listing symptoms and type of cancer, I would be distrustful of her.

Biopsy etc will take a large amount of money.
But i am surprised she wanted to check for cancer right away. Yeah i would think she would let the antibiotics run their course and then if it didnt work, additional testing.

Has your cat lost a lot of weight in the past 2-3 months?
She seems to have lost weight recently because she's barely been eating as I try wet foods on her to find some she likes. She stopped eating her dry food, but is so picky and doesn't want to eat much of the wet food. I'm currently slowly transitioning her back to Petcurean Now Fresh, which she reacts to excitedly as if it's junk food. At least she'll be eating more of it in a few more days, but she also hasn't been eating much because my room has been so hot in the heat wave that was Los Angeles. The A/C should be fixed tomorrow. :crossfingers:

Her pancreatitis attack was 3+ years ago. She recovered and regained her weight. Then on Petcurean Now Fresh, she became 1/2 lb too heavy according to her new vet. Then, she lost the extra 1/2 lb. I'm looking forward to her full transition back onto the Petcurean Now Fresh kibble. My cat is a tough one to feed a wet only diet. I don't think it's possible with her and the rescue shelter even told me she would only eat dry when I adopted her.

That's what she had in her carrier. It made me so mad that the ER vet people just left her in her carrier sitting on top of her diarrhea all evening and night. I was so glad to take her home and give her a bath. I felt terrible for her.

I would demand a reason for not putting her in a big cage or kennel where there's plenty of space to avoid sleeping on poop.

I didn't know what to say back then. I expected them to take my cat out of her carrier and put her in a cage or kennel and put in an IV line that they said they would to give her fluids as soon as I left. I think they said they were putting her in the oxygen tank too, but can't recall if maybe that was the specialist. I have a really bad long-term memory problem. I was about to get angry because my cat was looking so miserable and she turned around in her carrier when she saw me so her butt was facing me. I think I could smell the diarrhea. I definitely did on the drive home. I wasn't sure if cleaning my cat up (and throwing away the soiled pad in her carrier) was too much to expect from the ER. I also really wanted to take my cat home and try to nurse her back to health and was afraid that ER vet would say no, they were keeping her for another day and night. Come to think of it, that ER vet is terrible. I left the business a bad review outlining everything. They have some good 5-star reviews but quite a lot of really bad reviews. That ER vet was really amused when she told me that when my cat had diarrhea, she looked really surprised. I did not think that was funny at all. What an awful vet who probably hates cats.

My experience with a horrible vet didn't cost me as much as others have expeienced (~$400.00), but it was a complete waste of time and money. Last year my cat stopped eating and in the space of 24hr, went from being active and happy to curled up behind the bathroom, visibly miserable. Her vet office was fully booked through the weekend so I had to take her to an EV. In the initial exam, the vet didn't find anything definitive, so he took blood and urine samples and gave her a Vitamin B12 injection and antidepressants to stimulate her appetite. This was on a Friday.

They sat on the blood and urine samples for 4 days. I called them every day to find out the results, every day I was told the samples hadn't been processed. Meanwhile, the antidepressants did nothing to help her appetite and the only way I was able to get her to eat was by hand feeding her a couple pieces of kibble every hour (she doesn't tolerate syringes). Finally, on Tuesday afternoon, they called me back with the results and because they had to take even more blood because they forgot to run a test. By the way, their blood draw technique was horrible.

The vet said she had urinary crystals and had to immediately switch to a CTD diet (which I didn't believe - who leaves a urine samples sitting for 4 days?). I have no idea what their blood panel test was for - I picked up a copy of her medical record from the office and they only gave me the vet notes (they didn't forward the lab results to my regular vet either, even though they promised they would). The only thing the vet noted down next to "Blood test" was "FIV negative". The vet said that the blood test results were inconclusive. No mention of WBC count or other levels that my regular vet routinely checks for. Oh, and the test they needed more blood for - FELV test... For an indoor only, single cat household, with FELV/FIV negative parents, and no presentation of FELV symptoms in her entire life. At this point, I was so sick of them that I just wanted to leave and be done with it.

Her appetite had already started returning and I was able to get an appointment with her regular vet that same week. He pretty much refuted the conclusion the EV had reached. No, she didn't have urinary crystals (when regular vet takes a urine sample, he checks it under the microscope on the spot and does a lab test later that same day). The records the EV had sent over to the regular vet were the same that I had - so no mention of what her blood results were. Her regular vet didn't feel the need to repeat the blood tests since my cat was eating again and her energy levels were back up.
Just as a comparison for how long I wait for results from my regular vet vs that EV - when Smokey had her Adult Wellness Panel this year, her vet texted me the results the next day! He didn't wait 4 days to run the test.

My cat has the same issue right now- he won't eat much of his wet food, just the kibble. So I have to feed him Hartz bisque or stews to ensure he is getting enough water.

As long as your cat is eating whatever she likes and gains weight - thats good. I have heard of cats sleeping more and eating slightly less in the summer- but we have 2 ACs here and he cant bear the cold after awhile- so its at a set temperature.
I have been using The missing link and Fortflora to help with appetite and provide more nutrition.

Regarding the pancreatitis- how did they diagnose it? Blood work? Ultrasound?

My god that would have left me mad with anger. The hygiene part, infection part- too many risks, and just general common sense not let a vulnerable, sick animal sit in their poop.
If you can- report that vet now. Not sure what other idiotic stuff they might have done.

I absolutely 100% disagree that bloodwork should not be done unless the cat is elderly or showing signs of being ill. We all know that cats do anything they can to hide their pain so why on earth would you just wait until they seem ill? Routine bloodwork after they are a bit older, everywhere I worked used 8 years as the baseline to start really recommending bloodwork checks.

I worry about what corners they cut to get a dental with extractions down to $150 only. That is honestly ALARMING. Did they not monitor the surgery? Did they not medicate properly? How is this even possible? Was it a full, anesthetized dental cleaning?

Is this not good news though? Would you have preferred they fine something serious to justify paying that much to check? At what point are we being "ripped off by the vet" vs there being something the vet thought was suspecious that tested out normal. I mean, THANK GOODNESS they checked to make sure no? It's like, if they fine something bad in the tests people get mad that it wasn't caught sooner, but if they don't find anything at all then people get mad that they were ripped off. Many times it is a lose lose situation for the vet.

All very good point and I agree with you I am super glad the vet did do the the x-rays and the ultra sound and that they found nothing wrong. Believe me I was crying happy tears when they told me he is just fine that he is just fat. But at the same time I am kind of kicking myself for spending that much just to find out he is fat. Don't get me wrong I would happily spend that plus more just to get my cat healthily. I just feel like they should have let me take him home overnight so I wouldn't have to pay the overnight fee and then maybe just have them do an x-ray.

Blood work for the pancreatitis. Think they did an additional test. I have such a bad memory. It was a NASAL feeding tube. Not a neck feeding tube.

But the ER vet wanted to do a neck feeding tube.
Interesting- i just learned that can be done in cats. Nasal tube is temporary- the other two options (neck and stomach) can be left for weeks or months.
