A few weeks before Christmas, my family had adopted an 8 week old kitten. Since then we have tried Wellness Core, Sheba, Pro plan, Hills science diet wet cat food, and plain chicken and rice and he has consistently been having diarrhea. We’re at a complete loss on what to give him. Any recommendations?

Hi. Do you know what he was eating before you adopted him? If so, I would go back to that food and see if it stops the diarrhea. Get him settled again, and then you can experiment with other foods - only on a gradual basis. Like 80% 'old' food and 20% new food for a week, then increase the new and decrease the old over the course of the following month.

If you can't do that, you can try giving him some plain pumpkin (about 1 tsp), powered unflavored psyllium seed (1/2 tsp), or a probiotic such as saccharomyces boullardi, about 1/2 of a capsule in his food at least twice a day.

Thank you very much for the information! Yes he was previously on Sheba wet cat food, we tried it for a couple days as we thought he just needed time to settle in. He still had diarrhea though.

I would recommend a vet visit, kitten will need vaccines if never received anyways. Kittens tend to be very prone to diarrhea.

:yeah: I was going to recommend a Vet visit if you hadn't already been there. It could be worms or some other parasite, which is VERY common in kittens.

Ah yes, he did have tape worms but he was medicated quickly after finding out. Is there a certain cat food you recommend?

I don't know if food will sort this out, honestly, as even plain chicken still had problems.

If you're very confident it isn't parasites anymore, I suppose you might have allergies, but it's not something I've dealt with before.

I do know form my reading here, that chicken/turkey allergies and fish allergies seem to be the most common. What sort of proteins have you tried? Would you be able to take them to a specialist/back to the vet for more recommendations?

Also, just in case, you aren't feeding any dairy products (milk, cheese etc), or human treats to the kitten are you?
