I always just used the orange sauce packet included with the duck, but no idea what is in it (onions? garlic?), and was thinking Buddy might like a taste. Doubt he ever had duck before. So hoping to find a cat safe recipe for baking a whole duck.
Unfortunately I have only 'found' one brand of bouillon that does not have onions, garlic or both in the ingredients, but failed to source it locally or on the internet.I prepared a duck recently. I just put it up on a low rack in a roaster to catch the grease and roasted it like a chicken, basting it with some bouillon. Turned out excellent for a first try. Too expensive for everyday fare, but as a treat once in a while is on the agenda!

Yup, it was Wyler's and although it's pretty far down on the ingredient list, it has onions. Didn't know that. Won't feed any of that to the cats any more.Unfortunately I have only 'found' one brand of bouillon that does not have onions, garlic or both in the ingredients, but failed to source it locally or on the internet.
Massel is the only brand of bouillon that claims to be free of garlic and onions. Good luck finding it! This site claims there are other brands:Yup, it was Wyler's and although it's pretty far down on the ingredient list, it has onions. Didn't know that. Won't feed any of that to the cats any more.
I haven't roasted a duck in ages but I cook turkey and chicken all the time and my cats share it with me. I roast the meat very simply. I brush the skin with some olive oil and sprinkle it with coarse salt. They do not get the skin. Just the plain roasted meat. They get their portion first. If I want sauces or anything with mine it is added after they have theirs and usually I use the sauce as a dip in case I don't finish it so they can help me eat the leftover meat.I always just used the orange sauce packet included with the duck, but no idea what is in it (onions? garlic?), and was thinking Buddy might like a taste. I wouldnt replace giving him unseasoned baked duck with commercial treats, adding any sort of fresh food to your cat's diet does wonders. My stray cat Penguin loves baked lamb, I cut off a piece for her to bake separately as I prefer mine to be heavily seasoned while baking. I save her a big less fattier piece (Like a piece of the back), I debone, then bake it for her, then cut up into servings and freeze the rest. I add the baked lamb to her commercial food, at about 10 - 20% of her serving. I also add in other proteins but she loves lamb.I would do light or no salt, no pepper on the outside.
I know cats shouldn’t get salt but I given I used to sometimes give my cat a 1/4 inch by 1/4 (or less) of a wheat thin with the salt rubbed off ..... I can’t say much about giving cats people food. I replaced giving him wheat thins with giving him cat treats instead. You could try replacing giving him baked duck with something like delectable chicken & duck stew lickable treat.
If it is a very rare treat (once or twice a year) and not a lot, the cat should be fine. My mom gave her cat some ham every Christmas & Thanksgiving because he loved ham. He lived 20 years!
I can get duck legs anytime at Oakland or Frisco Chinatown, but whole duck only at Safeway supermarket...and only at Thanksgiving, Xmas, and sometimes Easter. So I have duck a lot. Goose is only available on those three holidays, and then is gawd-awful expensive. Xmas was the first time I had managed to budget for it, in like over five years. Chicken I have pretty much weekly. The stray loves my fried chicken and chicken broth, but Buddy has no interest in it. I have not tried him on turkey yet. Not a fan, so I only buy turkey thighs, and only when I have a craving, which is not often.I haven't roasted a duck in ages but I cook turkey and chicken all the time and my cats share it with me. I'd treat duck the same way. I may look for some the next time I go shopping. I'm sure they would love it.
I think Publix sells it. I just haven't looked for it. I order from Wild Fork Foods and they sell it. For turkey, thighs are the only option. Don't like the white meat, and the legs have like a zillion white cartilage strips in them. Well, not sure what they are. Don't remember them being in the turkey legs I used to eat at the state fair. I prefer thighs for the chicken too, as the legs never seem to have much meat and the round shape is too much bother to brown, unless you deep-fry. For duck and Goose I have no preference, as I crave every bit of that meat.I think Publix sells it. I just haven't looked for it. I order from Wild Fork Foods and they sell it. Thighs are my (our) favourite cut of poultry. Publix sells just turkey thighs and I pick up a package whenever they have them. The girls get very excited when they smell one roasting.
