Over the past couple of weeks George hasn’t been eating very well, his gums have gotten pale and he has been lethargic. I have an appointment at the vet on Friday. Hoping for the best.

George has red cell aplasia. Severely anemic. Vet says his body is making zero new RBC. Gave him Doxycycline and Prednisolone. At $1000 a pop we
have decided not to do blood transfusions. George may not make it. I wish I could be one of the folks that says no matter the cost but I just can’t. I know the 4.5 months George has been with us so far have very good for him. The vet could not identify a reason for the condition. I am sad and mad because George is a real sweetheart and I have tried so hard to provide great care and nutrition. Prayers for best outcome for George please.

Thank you. I can’t get him to try to eat this evening. I have been able to get him to eat about 1/2 oz most meals this week. I will try later but I have to give him his second dose of medicine in a couple of hours and he hates it. Foams at the mouth. I expect if the medicine goes in too close to the food it will probably all come back up. I could try straight Answers goats milk. Maybe I will try that.

Goats Goat's milk is good.
Have you tried heating the food? Adding warm water to make his food soupy?

What about odd things like
green beans,
asparagus,
parmesan cheese,
or tuna, tuna juice, bonito flakes,
fortiflora as a topper,
baby food with no onion or garlic,
cooked eggs or raw yolk (the white must always be cooked).
I'm keeping my fingers crossed something works :vibes::goodluck:

We had blood transfusions for a very old Maincoon mix we dearly loved done 3 times and I think it was about 200 dollars each time in 2002. She had bladder cancer and feline leukemia at 18 yrs old .

I would shop around? Last transfusion was from our Siamese we had and I dont think a good match and we lost Snookie soon after. They had no other donors so we knew it may backfire T I just bought Wysong's "Add Life" powdered supplement which seems to get my 17 yr old eating more wet food. Its got lots of things that get destroyed by heat and also first ingredient is digest of chicken and fish which I think stimulates appetite. Also contains a few pro-biotics and lots of other healthy things.
I'm sure your vet advised adding probiotics to re-establich flora in George's belly after anti-biotics.
Thoughts and prayers for George crossing fingers and toes!

I would have 23 cats if vet care wasn't sooo darn expensive.

George gets a probiotic daily all ready. I got him to eat about 1/2 oz again tonight - warm goats milk stirred into the Answers Detail warmed by putting the covered bowl in warm water. But this evening he is hiding under the pantry shelves. I tried to get his medicine in him. He takes the Doxy ok but not the Prednisolone which is the one he needs most. I just don’t know.Everything I am reading about this condition PRCA makes me sadder and less hopeful.

Apparently our Veterinary Specialists/ Emergency Class Inc is the only place one can get a blood transfusion done around here. At $1000 per transfusion.
George ate a bit better this morning but he is getting weaker. I planned to take him back to the vet tomorrow to be euthanized. Very sad.

I am so sorry about George. There really is not much you can do about PRCA except transfuse and pray. I’ll be thinking about you tomorrow morning and will light a candle for George tomorrow night.

I had to take George to the emergency vet this evening to be euthanized. He was extremely lethargic all day then about 5:00 he threw up and his breathing got really rapid. He was very quiet going over and didn't struggle at all. I think he had nothing left.

So sad. Louie is laying beside the carrier I used to take George to the emergency clinic. I don’t know how to help him understand where George went.
