Gotcha.
I would maybe try keeping them separate while you're at work, and (if you feel they're ready) out to explore while you're there at night. If anything big should happen, odds are you'll hear it. If they're good overnight, I'm sure they'll be good during the day as well.

Dali went under the bed. I can't reach under there and only way for me to physically get him out is to take the mattress off (I have a splattered bed). Decided not to stress him out and just leave the cats out over night.

Cassie isn't too thrilled, she's quietly growling at Rembrandt but showing no signs of aggression otherwise. She did the same with Monet whenever he got too close to her. I will watch her with Rembrandt and if it doesn't work out I'll separate them

My puppy Balki has been here since May, and Lila still gives him an annoyed growl if he gets too close or is annoying to her. A growl to warn him to keep his distance is good, it sounds like they're being very respectful of Callie and her space.

I think they're respecting Cassie. They aren't getting too close to her or attempting to touch her.

Rembrandt did come up on the bed with her and he was minding his business playing with a toy with his back to her about 2 feet away For a few seconds she did look away, then she got annoyed and bopped him. No claws and she didn't chase him either. Just a warning hit to stay away from her. She's still somewhat on a food strike. Eating half of her meals. At least she's eating something (and she could stand to lose a little weight too).

She never liked it when Monet got too close to her, she did the same, so I'm not too worried. It's basically how she is anyway. I'm glad my relationship with her didn't shift, she's still loving and close with me.

they all survived the night. Rembrandt went under the bed to be with his brother and he got stuck, he couldn't come out from under it. Oops. Had to take the mattress off so he could get out through the slats. Silly cat.

Actually, Dali seemed really terrified of me today for some reason. Not sure if something happened over night but it feels like a step back. I’m leaving him alone, I closed the door to the bedroom to separate them from Cassie while I’m at work.

he did eat his breakfast but reluctant to let me touch him. He ran from me where he’d let me stroke him. I know he needs time and space to adjust still. I’m just feeling disheartened

He might be a little on edge from all the extra space he has. It's very disheartening but I'd let him alone and see if he comes out on his own terms. Is Rembrant still acting normally after his first night out?

That's what I figured, he might still be feeling overwhelmed. Maybe letting all the doors open last night was too scary for him, despite me waking up to see him sitting on my dresser and not hiding. Hopefully he'll decompress while Im out of the house.

Rembrandt seems to be good, I don't see a step back with him. while he's confident, he still has his moments of nerves.

They still need time. I can't rush them!

I think you're handling them perfectly. With Rembrandt being brave and confident, I'm sure Dali will pick up his cues from his brother and follow.

Don't feel discouraged after a week- cats take at least 30 days to establish their territory and being loose throughout the house vs a smaller containment makes it harder for them especially a more timid cat that needs to be more confident, smaller spaces are easier for them to confidently become familiar and not be overwhelmed- Dali might have hurt herself, perhaps under the bed or who knows what and he is shying away from you for that reason- with cats the first priority should be they can explore and familiarize with a new place, have their safe spots and then thry feel less threatened by who is in that territory- so though Rembrant is ready to explore and more confident,Dali is not.... it'd be best not to let Dali get lost in the shuffle becayse his pace is slower than his brother

May I suggest keeping them in your bedroom when you are not home? So Cassie can have her house, her tree and her soace- the boys can have more space than the bathroom and Dali can gain some confidence and feel safe.....Meanwhile this just makes for more scent and room swapping and everyone gets much better acquainted by scent- not sight.....I'd hate to see Dali be a wallflower kitty or a hider when its easy enough to slow down the pace

Can you put some 2x4s or something around the base of the bed so no cats can get under it? I personally don't give cats places to hide where I have no access to reach them in the event it necessary or an emergency- a cubby box that's off limits to you will be the safe space if you ignore them when they ard in it until they accept you as their family ahd trusted one.....hope this can work for you and then you'll have peace of mind at work---- tye bed has the strongest scent of you plus leave an article of your clothing on it for Dali

For new cat trees, scratching boxes ,beds etc I rub on cat nip or use cat nip spray- works like a charm- often times the new smell of glue or resin is very off pudding to a cat---- use something to attract rather than repel if that's their problem( this is a common problem I found out with many overseas manufacturing of the newer products).... like GoPetClub and Frisco for example

Also,I've always used human thinning scissors( texture shears) for the thick long hair critters around the back of rear legs, behind ears and other places that would typically mat easily and it never looks choppy but can grow long and silky and it's easier to use a very fine comb.....thinning shears have rounded edges and no point yet sharp enough to cut through very thick fur,cat thinning shears are very dull in comparison

I don't want Dali to hide away forever either. He's really a sweetheart lover when he wants to be. The first day I brought them home he was all over me demanding pets and love, I wish I could show the video! I don't see that now with him, but I do hope it comes back out when he's ready.

I can't switch Cassie into the main part of the house really. The bedroom is HER room, and her litter box access is in the bedroom too (I have a hole cut in my wall where the box is in the hall closet). She spends most of her life in the bedroom anyway, I feel like locking her out of it would make her too unhappy.

Right now I have blankets blocking the bed, it isn't working. I have pool noodles on order but it won't be here until next week. I need to block the couch too- its a reclining couch and I don't want Dali to get hurt under there.

There's catnip on the cat tree, I rubbed it everywhere. The boys likes Cassie's tree, but hasn't given theirs much of a look. Maybe they like Cassie's scent, I should put her on that tree.

Seems like the best thing I can do right now is leave Dali alone to go at his own pace.

So then why not let Cassie stay in her favorite room and leave the boys to explore - so Dali gains more confidence...?

I love the cut out idea to the closet for litter box-very cool:idea:

Can you maybe block off the kitchen or something- if not then it is what it is- since Rembrant is very easy try playing wand with him on the cat tree so his scent gets all over it and Dali can be Comforted with his scent on some vertical space and in that nice condo cubby- perfect little safe place.... do your best to block under furniture and encourage cubby hidey places

It will be okay with what you doing with Cassie in her bedroom ahd the boys together in the rest---- Just don't get discouraged becsuse it's going to be fine❤Just let Dali move at his own pace,he's going to be okay

Great news!!! I wonder if Dali just was overwhelmed by all the space he had to explore and decided to lay low for a few.
And awesome photos! Now, the big question is, how on earth do you tell them apart?!

It took me a while!
Rembrandt is bigger. Dali is pretty petite. Rembrandt also has a fluffier mane which is the biggest difference at a glance. Rembrandt looks more Maine Coon than Dali overall.
Dali has a white tip on his tail that separates him from Rembrandt as well.

One thing I can't tell if their legs are short, or if it's their long fur and pudgy bellies that makes them look short. Cassie is tall next to them.
