This thread is about trying to determine what age/sex/type of cat to adopt for another cat that lost its sibling. If you are a in rush, skip to the last paragraph. I am especially grateful for responses from "cat specialists", vets, animal behavior experts or those that were in a similar situation and can provide some much needed advice.

I will try to keep the sad story short - I found these 2 female kittens :catman::catman: abandoned in a ditch, while living in another country for a short while (Cyprus, its a small country where the population of cats, mostly feral and/or abandoned cats is 2x the number of people), and it was love at first site, we intended to find a home for them as we did for few other cats while living there, but of course we never were able to, so by the time they were about 1 year old or so, we moved out to another country. Some 2 years later, this April, our beautiful, gentle kitty Palermo, suddenly succumbed to an autoimmune disease and despite treatment and seeing different vets/animal hospital, within less than 2 weeks after any symptoms she was suddenly gone. Her sibling, Corleone, has coped better than we expected, in the sense that although she was a bit less active for a few days, still played, ate normally, etc., partly I guess because she is so attached to us, sometimes I think she probably believes herself to be a human rather than a cat.
She is especially fond of my wife and likes to cuddle her all the time, snuggle in her face, lets her pick her up all the time, while I'm more of her play buddy. As we both have jobs and my wife is soon going back to a more full time job, we are now thinking of Corleone's well-being spending a big part of the day alone (we live in a flat), and we are considering adopting another cat for her company and ours. While they were together they were fierce-fully playful with each other, "tearing down the house" kind of playing, chasing each other and running/jumping about. Corleone still is very active, we play chase with her, she knows how to fetch sticks as well :yess: plus she's got a ton of toys, but still of course its not the same as when she had her beautiful sister, and I'm sure deep inside she missed on all that action, not to mention their long sessions of licking each other (she sometimes comes by us and starts licking us affectionately for a short while until she sort of realizes something's not right, this she never used to do while her sister was around :ohwell:

We already decided we most definitely would never "buy" a cat from the pet store, we will surely adopt one, but we are having difficulties trying to consider how to best match a cat so as to reduce any chance of "non-compatibility". Corleone is a 3 year old cat, extremely playful and mindful of us, she rarely ever likes to spend too much time by herself if we're around. Our thoughts so far, but without any "facts" to back it up was to consider getting a young cat, not a kitten, but maybe 6mo to 2 year old or so, on account of Corleone being always so active and demanding a ton of playfulness at all times:dance:but at the same time I'm almost certain there will be some degree of jealousy towards the newcomer in the beginning at least, so we would like to minimize that as best as we can. We read that young male cats, especially if neutered are generally more mild-mannered than females, but I'm pretty sure it probably depends more on each cats personality as well. So if you have some advice, like what to look for in behavior/traits of the potential newcomer, although I realize it will be quite difficult to observe much on a short encounter, will be very-very helpful for us.
Corleone says hi (she's the all-black kitty) and I've attached a couple of photos of her beautiful sister we lost and miss so much :(, Palermo :angelcat: she was a tuxedo kitty, the most graceful and gentle cat I've ever seen, very different from her sister outside of their playing sessions when both went a bit bonkers.

Thanks for reading and for letting us share their/our story.

And a couple of "baby pics", from the very first day I found them, and few weeks later.

A young active resident cat is likely to do pretty well with a kitten. If you try to get another young active cat (non-kitten) good chance it will work, but since you have two cats to worry about the reaction of, there is going to be a slightly higher chance of problems -- you don't really have to worry about the reaction of a kitten (once they adjust) as they are very adaptable. Young active resident + kitten tends to be a pretty easy introduction process.

Thanks for the reassurance, I hope so too...

Just wanted to follow-up with a short story:
- last November we started looking in the local shelters and online and on very soon after met Forza Sorellina (née Otylka, which is now her backup name:D)

I wanted to name her Sorellina for obvious reasons, my wife also thought up of a name and couldn't come up with one immediately, but weeks later, seeing the humongous amounts of energy and mischievousness she exudes, thought of calling her Forza :dizzycat:

Corleone, our resident cat has hissed a bit at first, naturally (in fact she had lost her voice by the 3rd-4th day), we kept the kitten separated in another bedroom with just a little time per day of door being open and a fence in place, afterwards I used some of the methods recommended here to "speed up" the process, and within just 10 days or so, Corleone had already started playing with the small one, cautiously at first and then becoming buddies more and more.

A couple of weeks ago we took Sorellina for her spaying operation, as she had already started her heat cycles, a bit precociously might I add, and now after having the stitches removed she is back to her 110% energy mode (in fact she had started jumping about even on the same night after the operation but we tried to keep her restrained and separated those days for fear of her busting the stitches).

Thanks for the advice and the thoughts at the time, I learnt quite a bit by reading thru this forum, and here's a couple of snapshots of Sorellina, she is truly a bundle of joy and mischief at the same time (first photo was first day with us)

I'm just seeing this thread for the first time. So sorry you lost sweet Palermo, but thank you so much for rescuing her and Corleone.

We have a Crossing the Bridge forum if you would like to write a tribute to Palermo.
RIP sweet girl.

I'm happy to read you've adopted a new kitten. She's adorable. I hope she and Corleone will become best friends. :catlove:

Many thanks. My wife actually often says its the cats who saved her. She had been going through a rather stressful, depressing period at the time when we took inthe kitties, and it helped her enormously with coping. The loss of her dad last year, as well as Palermo put her back in a depression which is being healed day by day, partly because of this black loving fur-ball that we have at our side. Many people don't believe in guardian angels, but now I see them in the eyes of people's friendly and often furry companions.

It’s absolutely true and beautiful that cats can and do heal. We think we’re helping them, but often they help us heal. I too, believe animals can be like guardian angels in the sense that they sense we need them. In a years time we lost all our beloved pets. Beju, a Siamese/ragdoll mix, Cotton, our little Japanese bobtail girl and Makita, the best and beautiful dog ever. The were 16, 16 and 13 respectively. Makita was the last to pass. It was devastating because my husband is battling bone marrow cancer. And I felt hopeless. Last July I decided I was ready for a kitten. It was hard to find one because people wouldn’t answer my inquiries or I’d call and someone already adopted it. I looked every day at humane society sites and Craigslist etc. on my lunch break I saw a new post and he had 2 kittens. Beautiful kittens! I called him right away and he had just posted them a half hour before I saw his post. I told him I’d be there right after work and he told me I was 1st to respond so I could choose. I held Jemima’s sister 1st, very sweet. Then I held Jemima; she looked right into my eyes with such depth and intensity that I knew and she knew she was mine. It was an instant connection. Jemima was chosen but she chose us. I truly believe she was sent to us for our healing. Sorry this was so long. I’m so very sorry for the loss of your precious girl. I’m so happy you have your new girl who is so precious looking too 💕 thank you for sharing your beautiful journey...
