Knowing I'm a cat lover, a friend asked me my advice about getting a cat for her household. The problem is that one of her children is allergic and my friend was wondering if there is a particular type of cat that has less dander or if there is some way to minimize the dander short of vacuuming constantly, bathing the cat or other time-intensive aids (she works full-time and has three children).

Thanks for the help!

Dander is created by the act of the cat cleaning itself. The shed skin cells, mixed with saliva are the culprit. Almost everyone can tolerate a cat if there is weekly baths. These do not have to be time consuming. Get a shorthaired kitten and begin baths immediately...they will get use to it and some even enjoy them. Dawn dishwashing liquid is great for the neck down...baby shampoo will take care of the neck up. Putting a couple of cotton balls in the ears helps protect them from getting water in them.
