Hi all, made an account just to ask this question after not finding any helpful answers by using search engines (but did find this lovely site of fellow cat lovers!).

Five days ago, I brought home a nine week old kitten from a litter that my sister’s cat had. I was getting pressured and didn’t want the little baby to either stay with my sister (not a good environment, too many other animals among other things 🙄) or end up with one of her associates. I have tried giving her the Royal Canin baby cat wet food, the dry version, variants of Tiki Cat mousse, and KMR. She doesn't really want to eat any of these. She'll pick at them a little, but if left alone with a bowl of food, does not eat a noticeable amount. She also has been straining in the litter box. She will pee, has not had trouble drinking water, but will make audible fart noises and produce completely liquid lighter colored stool and sometimes a very dark and shriveled one. I'm not sure if she doesn't want to eat much because she was separated from her mother and siblings, if she is stressed (I do have another three month old kitten who is twice her size and a little menace), she has a health problem that was not caught before, or if she's constipated. I do not believe that she was fully weaned. I feel terrible that she is without her mother, but glad that she is out of the home of people who do not spay any of their cats, outdoor or otherwise, and breed a blacklisted breed of dogs. Although I am not sure, I think that she has lost some weight since bringing her home. She was only 1.14lbs upon bringing her home when she was nine weeks! My other kitten I had found on the city streets and I was informed that she was by herself for days, and she still weighed more at nine weeks and was much more interested in food (three cans of Royal Canin per day!). What can I do for the little darling! I have no clue and I'm worried for her!

Hi. She is adorable. She needs to see a veterinarian ASAP. This may mean going to an urgent care facility or an emergency hospital. You won’t be able to help her without veterinary intervention.

A very rough gage is that a kitten should weigh 1 lb for each month of age. Kittens should have good healthy, even voracious appetites. A kitten not eating well is a sign of a serious problem.

Kittens can become very dehydrated and fade extremely fast. Think over a couple of hours. The sooner she gets care the better.

Kittens are extremely fragile and that one is far to cute to let die. All cats and kittens are too cute to let die.

Don’t try any over the counter products or old wives take fixes at home. Just get her seen by a veterinarian to address what is going on.

Thanks for your response! I did actually get her to eat a whole packet of high calorie kitten food supplement and shrink two teaspoons of KMR since I initially posted. She drank quite a bit of water as well, but I haven’t had any troue with getting her to drink. I’m just very concerned about her not having a high enough caloric intake. She seems so tiny and bony and she’s not even the kitten that I found completely abandoned…
We went to a monthly vet clinic on Saturday before I brought her home, which is when I found out her weight. I thought that she would have issues with her diet because of transferring to a new food, and the veterinarians there told that she probably would. She received dewormer and they also told me that she might have gastrointestinal problems for a little bit. Despite being told that this could happen, it just doesn’t sit right with me. I think that I’m going to take her to the family vet tomorrow. My mother volunteers at a nearby shelter, and I’ve been noticing a smell in my apartment that reminds me of the kittens there that need special treatment during intake. Maybe it’s just me because I’m a worrywart. But I love this little baby… I’ve taken care of kittens who as little or smaller than her before, but have never experienced this 😣
