2 male 1 year old brothers both neutered. Always playing and having fun throughout the house. They do go outside on occasion. While they were outside I needed to make a short run around the corner. One of the cats came up to me and I put him in the truck for the short ride without his carrier. He waited in the truck until I returned and when I opened the door he bolted. Could not find him that night or the next day. He returned home 27 hours later, thank goodness.

Upon his return home his brother gave him the sniff test, smelling him all over, apparently he did not pass the test. Now they will not have anything to do with each other. I've tried everything to make them reconnect with no luck.

I assume the one that ran away must have interacted with other cats or something else.
Will take both to the vet for baths to see if that helps.

Is this somewhat normal behavior?

You could also try a bit of vanilla extract on that towel. It's been known to work wonders.
