He begs for food,he's on fluid therapy(subq) for kidney issues and he's old so he is not very active anyway, hopefully i'll get a urine sample as you suggested or  the vet can get one next time. the kitten may have even injured him she's always batting at his hind end when he is passing by or going up the steps.could the kidneys not functioning normally cause a stone or crystals that irritated him causing him to bite and lick to dislodge them? a client at the vet's office told me their cat had cancer that spread and affected the brain and the cat began compulsive self mutilating behaviors.

Diabetes and hyperthyroidism will cause lower urinary tract issues, crystals, infection.

However if left untreated lower urinary issues will move up into the upper urinary tract, which involves the  kidneys and can cause kidney failure.

Acute kidney insufficiency can be caused by an obstruction of urinary flow at various parts of the urinary tract. Obstruction can occur in cats of any age and is more common in males.

Unless he has had bloodwork done recently with kidney function being normal, I wouldn't suspect any urinary tract issues to be causing this now, I tend to think it is simply his age, as I think with how common it is, the older the cat, the better chance he does have some loss of function.

I can't say it's normal, but doesn't seem abnormal for a 17 yr old guy either.

he had bloodwork,  his yearly senior panel they check for hyperthyroidism, diabetes, kidney function and more on feb 7 2015 about a week before this happened and other than reduced kidney function everything was fine he also was becoming anemic which usually happens with kidney issues. since I've been keeping the ecollar on all the time he cannot lick and I've been keeping the affected area very clean it's looking a lot better. i'll just have to observe him closely after the ecollar comes off and I need to get a urine sample as well. my daughter's 17 yr old female had a urinary infection that she couldn't shake even with meds and it spread to the kidneys and she was hospitalized for over a week cost $2500 to save her. I personally prefer my older cats w/kidney issues to have an antibiotic shot along with oral meds for UTI'S I see reoccurrence of infection less often and resolution of infection quicker.

That's the big drawback of feeding dry only diet unfortunately.

Lots of people feed dry only, I did too for years, but as I learned more and more of just how it affects their unrinary tract.

The dry is depleting, with only 12% water content compared to canned which is about 75-80% water.

Cats have a system that requires alot of water to dilute their urine and keep their urinary tract/bladder healthy and crystal free.

They just don't drink enough, so adding in canned is a big help with uti's and avoiding them.

I see in your posts that you've been down that road plenty in the past. It will greatly reduce the incidence of uti's and crystals/blockages if you were able to add canned in daily.

Plus it sounds like he will love it :)

I was just looking at his previous urine test and the ph was high. The only canned food he likes is fancy feast and those new fancy feast appetizers and chicken flavor baby food . Also his penis swelling has went down a lot,but it seems like there is a hard scab on it, is that possible, no infection is present and it hasn't retracted yet either.  at least it looks no worse and the swelling goes down everyday.i'm praying there's no permanent damage that would require surgery as that isn't an option for him.

I had a thought this morning while having my wake up coffee. How is your cat in water? Thinking why not have him soak in a tub of warm water for a while, it doesn't need to be over his body but enough so that he is laying his genital area in it, allowing it to just soak for a bit?

If this is an option, don't dry his penis off directly, just allow it to air dry.

It may be helpful in softening his scabbed area, and feel quite soothing.

Here is a link that is simple and educating on urine ph/acidity and how it affects your cat's urinart tract health.

http://cats.about.com/od/lowerurinarytractdisease/qt/catsurinpH.htm

High ph causes crystal formation, I would def. start feeding ff canned, it will increase his water intake, which controls these crystals.

I never realized it at the time but one of the vets I took him to specializes in urology, I didn't even know there was such a thing, so far he looks better everyday since I put a different e collar on him and haven't taken it off at all. hopefully after the scabbing heals he'll go back to normal.

That's good. Glad he is improving. I had aTom with a similar problem but now I see what he had was just minor by the looks of your poor little boy. He is lucky to have a great parent like you taking care of him!!!

Please keep me posted.I have a 16 year old Bengal with the same problem. the specialist wants to cut off his penis, but the regular veterinarian said he will probably still continue to mutilate where the penis belongs. Further at the age of 16 I'm not sure I want to put him through that drama. he is also in the beginning stages of kidney disease.I also use that e collar that is inflatable. he has a small bump inside of his sheath that is forcing the penis out. The specialist checked and there were no cancerous cells, which is good news. But he will not leave his penis alone. He has now taken to rubbing the collar on his penis. So we still have moments with blood. Last night my youngest daughter was holding him while she slept and he got out of his e collar. I woke up to find his paws covered in blood and his penis dripping blood as if he was having a period. He has an appointment with the specialist on Thursday. It has been about 3 months since all of this started and we have lost two cats during that timeframe. I think their death and this issue are directly related but the specialist is hesitant to give him medication for anxiety or depression since she has had little to no success with them. the swelling had gone down significantly and his penis had black scabbing that was soft. Unfortunately he got to it last night. I'm just sitting here crying not knowing what to do.

There is nothing worse than feeling helpless when there is something wrong with our fur babies and you just want to do something for him because you know that they're in pain.  My thoughts and prayers go out to you and yours.

I am sorry for your cat's issues, but I just wanted to let you know that this thread is old, and the OP hasn't been active in a long time so posting to this thread is probably not going to get you much in the way of results.
