General Information

The Litter-Robot Open-Air, Self-Cleaning Automatic Cat Litter Box makes cat ownership easier every day for pet parents. It sifts clumps and waste out of the litter 3-7 minutes after a cat leaves and drops the waste in to a receptacle drawer for easy disposal. The new Litter-Robot Open-Air model is the first major update to the highly successful and desired Litter-Robot platform. This model is a culmination of the latest technology and customer feedback received over the last 15 years. The patented sifting process cleans litter automatically after each use and deposits waste in a large-capacity waste drawer. A drawer full indicator light will notify you when the waste drawer is full so you never have to guess when to empty your Litter-Robot. The larger, more ergonomic cat entry and litter chamber along with the new self-adjusting cat sensor accommodates cats weighing 5lbs or more. There is also an automatic night light that provides lighting for elderly cats during night time visits to the litter box. Other new features include control panel lockout, variable wait time setting, 8 hour sleep mode, and a battery backup option. The Litter-Robot Open-Air comes with a 90 day money back guarantee and a full 18 month warranty. With more than 110,000 customers, 15 years in business and 3 versions of the Litter-Robot, we have developed the solution for pet parents to never have to scoop again!

Pros: no scooping! cats have a clean box every time! cleaner kitty paws in your your house!
Cons: price
A litter box which cleans itself automatically that you can monitor via your phone? It’s not science fiction—it’s the Litter-Robot 3 Connect! This high tech litter box completely eliminates the unpleasant chore of scooping out the litter box—all you need to do is remove a waste bag from it periodically (once a week for a single cat and more often for multiple cat households) and you are good to go. No special litter or bags are required—a good clumping litter and tall kitchen garbage bags work fine. (Yes, Litter-Robot sells its own litter and own bags, but the system works fine without them.) A bonus of the new Connect version of the Litter-Robot is that it allows you to use an app on your phone (iPhone or Android) to monitor the litter box remotely. You can see when your cat uses the box, monitor the level of the waste drawer, and receive notifications if something is amiss, such as an operating fault of some kind or a full waste drawer. The app isn’t perfect, but it is helpful, and kind of fun to use. It is essentially a nice addition to a truly stellar product. The Litter-Robot 3, if operated properly, truly does free you from litter box drudgery. Only having to take out a full waste bag and replace it with a clean bag twice a week (I have two cats) is a far cry from having to actually scoop out a litter box to clean it. And as the Litter-Robot cleans itself after each use, your cat never has to do its business in a dirty box. This makes the cat happier: cats are known to prefer eliminating in a clean box. And for you, it means that your cat isn’t walking around your home with dirty paws. And speaking of your home, it is going to smell better with the Litter-Robot than with a typical litter box, because all the waste is gathered in a closed area with a carbon filter to reduce any escaping odors. Overall, it is an outstanding system.

So what’s the catch? It is quite expensive, running $449 for the basic Litter-Robot 3 and $499 for the fancier Connect model with the smartphone app connection ability. Also, you have to follow a pretty strict set of guidelines to make sure it operates correctly. Essentially:

1. You have to be careful to use just the right amount of litter—too little and your cats don’t have enough to do their business in and too much and the weight is too heavy for the system. And it has to be a clumping litter—not every kind of litter will work

2. You must be sure that the feet of the Litter-Robot are on a hard, flat level surface (if on tile, even grout lines can be problematic, so you have to work around those)

3. The litter box cannot touch any walls

4. You have to press the reset button after each addition of fresh litter, removal of a waste bag, or repositioning of the unit. )

There are also a few other periodic maintenance things you need to do—there are a few places in the litter box where litter dust can build up which affects the operation of the device—but these are not difficult and don’t need to be done very frequently. Disassembling the device and cleaning it periodically is nice to do, I suppose, but really not that necessary unless your cat is particularly messy or you have super high standards. (In my approximately 8 years of use of Litter-Robot cat boxes, I think I have emptied and washed out the globe twice.) In my opinion, if you have the money for this litter box and you can follow the operating instructions, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is truly a game changer. It takes all the icky stuff out of owning an indoor cat.

Many thanks to the kind folks at Litter-Robot for sending me out this sample to review.

Pros: Human convenience.
Cons: Mechanical noises that scare cats.
Mechanical movements that scare cats.
When a cat uses the litter box it's important that they feel safe- or they'll find other places to do their business. While this product is pretty convenient for us humans, cats don't usually like noises and mechanical stuff buzzing around them while they take care of their private business. So save your money and just buy a regular litter pan and clean it out often.

Pros: So far it is fabulous! Uses very little litter, and I haven't had to empty the poop drawer yet. Best of all, no scooping!! My very scaredy cat adapted to it right away. No smell, small space with litter out of view essentially.
Cons: price! But, I think it is worth it to me. I got it with 18 month warranty, extra litter bags, door fence included. I overfilled it the initial filling, didn't see the fill line, easily remedied.
I hate scooping litter, but I love having a cat. This is fricking fabulous! I am very excited about this new item. Hoping that it will continue to live up to my initial impressions for a very long time.

Comments

I have had the original one now for over 10 years and it has NEVER jammed. It had a smaller opening but basically was the same as the new Open Air which I purchased a year ago. It is everything the ad promises to be and my cats who used the old one immediately took to the new one.  When I brought a new adult cat to join the family he took to it also immediately. There will always be cats that will not use anything new but the return policy is better than anything on the market. Try it for 90 days and if you or kitty does not like it you can return it.  Warranty is for a whole year and the company will pay for shipping charges both ways. They will replace or repair until you are happy as  nothing is perfect and one can always get a dud... Best of  all it's made in the US.

Hi All,

I'm considering an Automatic Litter Box, since I now have 4 adult cats and a kitten (almost a year old actually). Does anyone have any advice, comments, suggestions, recommendations, etc., on the use of an Automatic Litter Box. I have to scoop all my boxes 2x a day and it's gets to be a chore sometimes, especially at the end of a long day.

Please let me know what you all think, thanks!!!

I received mine on Monday. You just plug it in and fill it up, very easy setup. It's fairly bulky (not heavy), so not the best option if you live in a small apartment. What I'm doing is getting them familiar with it, and rewarding their curiosity with snacks. They haven't used it yet, but they've both been in there. Their litter box is next to it, and I'm just going to let it fill up and get stinky, so they'll want to poop in the pod.

If it works as advertised, this is a life changer, especially with my back and knee problems.

No strain on me
No smell
No scooping
No mess

No brainer if you can afford the price tag.

I am sad to report that I am not as happy with the new model as I was with the original one . I had to return the base twice and the top once. After 5 months it is acting up again: it stops half way through the cycle and gets stuck there. I have to unplug it and then push the button to start the cycle again and hope it won't get stuck again. This has happened 3 times in the last two weeks. The original one is still working fine and has NEVER given me any problems after more than 10 years.

Get a reconditioned previous model without all the bells and whistles. The only reason I got the new one is because I have a cat who does not tolerate a covered box and the new one's entry is much larger and not as closed in. The Amazon website has a lot of negative comments on it.
