  • ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS. The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever.” But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.

I really enjoyed this book, a fascinating story of how a human and blind kitty made their relationship work, Homer is a real character, and this story shows what a pet owner went though during 9/11 when she was not allowed to return home to her beloved blind cat until days later. a great read!

I bought a book called the bachelor's cat and it was a sweet read.Little kitten darted in his door on a cold snowy day, hid out and the man coaxed it out of hiding, fed it, took care of it. His snarky girlfriend did not like it. He learned that those whom the kitten did NOT like were NOT worth his time either. A really sweet book!!

When I was a kid we had a blind Siberian Husky. If you've ever known a Husky, you know that they're wanderers by nature. Ours only learned to limit her wandering to our neighborhood after she was hit by a car on a major thoroughfare. She had become blind when she caught distemper while pregnant. Lost the whole litter, her sight, and her ability to ever breed again. (She was one of the first Siberian Huskies in Colorado, and the vet didn't realize that Huskies are genetically so close to wolves that they need stronger doses and more boosters when they get vaccinated.) My mother says that after her eyes were surgically removed following the auto accident, she displayed so much relief that my mother thinks she must have been in a lot of pain before then.

Every kid in the neighborhood thought she was their family dog. They all had bowls of food and water for her on the back porch (some with her actual name on them!), they all had beds for her on the back porch, and when we'd go over to play they'd introduce us to her.

When I think of a guide in dark places, I think of her. Her death was the first major loss in my life. I still miss her.

I had never heard of this book before. Thank you.
