General Information

A recent earthquake was only the beginning of the big trouble that plagues Molena Point, California. Joe Grey may be merely a cat, but he's already solved more murders than your average human detective, and he knows the "accident" on Hellhag Hill was anything but. Unfortunately Joe's somewhat erratic, if lovable, owner Clyde thinks cats should keep their paws out of police work, and locks Joe and his feline lady friend Dulcie out of the house when Officer Max Harper pays a social call. But Joe can be a very stubborn tomcat when he sets his mind to it. And he's not about to give up the hunt. A killer needs to be apprehended, and Joe Grey's just the cat for the job -- especially since the humans who should be on the case don't seem to have a clue.

Pros: This book explores the relationships between the speaking cats, and between the speaking cats and their owners, and between the humans.
Cons: Several parts of the book reference tales that the humans are telling each other, but they never actually say what the tales are.
While out hunting one morning speaking cat Joe Grey finds two starving half-Great Dane puppies that he assumes were abandoned, and he takes them home so that his human, Clyde  can take care of them. Meanwhile his feline compatriot, Dulcie, is camping out on their back porch watching the drama unfold next door as a rowdy Irish-American family descends on t he home and peace of the widow before the funeral. To make events even crazier shops around Molena's Point (the cats' hometown and stomping ground) are being hit with shoplifting sprees that, while petty, are eating up a lot of police time. Just when it seems the world can't get any crazier--there's an earthquake and a clowder of feral cats that can speak appear, claiming to have traveled underground. There's drama, murder and mayhem, and, of course, animal rescue and training. A good book and an engaging read. I highly recommend it.
