Should one feed special formula kidney food right from the get-go?

After dealing with my massive loss, I wonder if it's ever too soon to begin a kidney-friendly diet. We feed BLUE standard food (not Wilderness or Basics) and have done so for the past 4 years (before that was Taste Of The Wild until our William got kidney stones). Their coats are lustrous and...

    She's gone.

Sadie is ready to cross the bridge.

Thanks for the kind wishes everybody. I wish that she'd just go. I don't want to euthanize her. But the little tater just keeps hanging on. Unfortunately she can't walk or stand now, just folds like a house of cards. So I just hold her and take her where she wants to go. I know that's tough for...

Sadie is ready to cross the bridge.

My beautiful 16 yo calico Sadie, whom I've had for 12 wonderful years (since 2008) is nearing the end. We are a cat loving household with four adorable cats. She had some hip wasting starting in 2018 but it wasn't anything alarming until about a year later when we began to see her drop weight...

    Bengal Troubles

Thanks for all of the responses! I will try the suggestions listed. He just curled up onto the recliner part of the couch now - he can be so affectionate sometimes! Key word being sometimes, lol!

    Bengal Troubles

Kamikaze (as we have named him, due to his insane energy and running into/over/under things) has been sort of a problem child since we got him 18 months ago. We bought him from an independent non-professional breeder but he isn't officially licensed. We got him at age 1 month. I'm guessing he...

    What the poop?

Ok, so there hasn't been one iota of useful information on this thread so far pertaining to my main topic.  So, TO SOMEONE THAT CAN HELP - -  What the hell is this liquified cow dung?

Introducing a new kitten to the family

2 of our 3 adult cats are very upset that we decided to bring a kitten into the family. Kitten (Benji) is roughly 8 weeks of age. They fight a lot and are hissing. When the kitten is not around they are fine but when he is in the room they hiss at each other. Sometimes the 2 adults fight with...

    What the poop?

So, to make this a short story, we recently moved in to a house in a small town where some feral cats have been hanging out. Turns out a mother cat (affectionately named by us "mama cat") has had 2 batches of litters; one with two cats that are now around 8 months, no longer feeding; and the...

cat kneading my stomach - can he hurt me?

My dainty girl cat kneads me all the time and it doesn't bother me unless i'm laying down and she starts kneading my face. Our persian male cat is a bigger cat with big, fat, meaty paws, and when he kneads, it HURTS! I can only take about 4 or 5 kneads before I push him off my lap, lol. It...

Haha, my cat loves watching TV

She's such a weird, interesting, crazy cat. If we're watching a movie she really doesn't care, but once we turn on Animal Planet she parks her behind on the couch or on the floor and actually WATCHES tv. When a commercial comes on she does something else like groom herself or look somewhere else...

Iams Original Chicken Formula for UTI in male cat?

Well - I was officially informed today by my wife that Gabe actually does NOT like his Purina One food. He chokes it down but only because it's what available. So we picked up the orange bag of Iams and I managed to find some cheap Friskies Special Diet UTI formula wet food. I don't normally...

Iams Original Chicken Formula for UTI in male cat?

Not to thwart what you and several other people are saying, but we had our cats on an 80/20 wet/dry ratio for their food. We would feed them nothing but wet food 5 out of the 7 days of the week. He still developed a UTI. We have switched to entirely dry food and he is doing fine on the UTI dry...

Iams Original Chicken Formula for UTI in male cat?

He is very sensitive to fish. We can feed him wet as long as it doesn't have fish, because as we (and our vet) figured out, it triggers his UTI almost immediately. We haven't been feeding wet because we haven't taken the time to look for it. but we have a pet fountain that he is drinking from...

Iams Original Chicken Formula for UTI in male cat?

We had been feeding Gabriel the Royal Canin SO formula for awhile until it got to be too expensive. We switched to Purina One Urinary Tract formula and so far it has been working well (2 months going strong). Only problem is that Chicken is the third ingredient, and it's sandwiched between corn...

    Is holistic food just hype?

Right now we are feeding a mixture of Taste Of The Wild and Chicken Soup. TOTW costs us roughly $28 for a 15-lb bag, and Chicken Soup we mix in once in awhile if we are tight on money. I think what I'm going to do from now on, there is a brand at the Tractor Supply called "4Health" and it...

    Is holistic food just hype?

We switched our cats to holistic food about a year or so ago, as I was convinced that more expensive food with real ingredients made a difference. But I got to thinking after our youngest one got a UTI. When I was growing up we had two cats, one of them lived to be 16 human years, and ate...

    No grain-free

Here's a mind-boggler. Our female cat and our older male cat are doing fine on TotW (so far) but our young male cat just developed a UTI and we have been feeding TotW for awhile. I think what it all comes down to is - it depends on the cat. And also - you can't go wrong with a wet diet.
