    Dr. Elsey's Formula Change

My diabetic cat Sister went into remission after switching to Dr. Elsey's turkey dry. Then in 2023, the shortage due to ingredients sourcing forced me to buy pricey chicken formula on Ebay (lots of gouging but I was desperate). Next, Dr. Elsey's office finally shipped chicken dry to Amazon, so I...

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Thanks for that advice about not switching foods yet. Sister's 2nd Urine Protein Creatine Ratio test was yesterday, and her numbers improved. The first test was 1.2. Her results yesterday went down to 0.6. Still slightly elevated, but I am elated. She has one more test to go in two weeks. Had I...

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

I have not met with the vet since Feb 2. So not sure what the medication is. Her voicemail today only discussed my changing to Hills as a trial.

Wow, I am understanding UPCR so much better! Thanks for the article.

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Thanks. The current vet does not know if Sister has kidney disease. She is testing/guessing. I know that diabetes can damage them. But I did not know it was BP that did it. When Sis suddenly had hind end neuropathy in 2021, I thought she had an injury. Went to vet ASAP. Her BG was 476, something...

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Took Sister for her second UPCR test today. Vet tech said there was a miscommunication. The tests are to be done every two weeks, NOT 3 tests within 2 weeks. So the sub vet Dr. Clark was incorrect. I think the INDEXX report also reads within 2 weeks. The vet tech says Sister's vet believes...

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Thanks, great input. Often, I am trying to absorb/understand the new terms she is telling me, and she is already on the next topic, and it is overwhelming. I leave thinking I will be able to sort it all out with my own research, always hoping that I have found a vet that is not just running...

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Thanks so much. Good to know. (I thought the chloride was a tad low, not high. But I don't know what that is.) Vet has not mentioned subQ fluids as a possible treatment, yet. Sister's urine is not very concentrated (she said). Sis drinks a lot and pees a lot. Has for many years, even before her...

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Thanks so much for your input. I have attached the most recent lab results. (I checked all the vet notes. Did not see evidence of BP being checked.)

Sister, 16, Urinalysis Shows Elevated Protein

Sister is a diabetic, fully regulated (off insulin since 2021) using low carb food (Dr. Elsey's CleanProtein) which contains 59% animal protein. So her wellness exams last week (BW, urine, xrays) indicated protein in the urine. Vet suggested special urine tests which we just did. Result: Protein...

    Am I overreacting?

Yes! The FAIM board was immensely helpful when I had a cat with asthma (now deceased). I did not realize the board was still operating.

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

Yes I can call a mobile vet to ask if they're willing to chase her around my condo, up and down the loft stairs, under beds and furniture, to try to grab her. Cuz I'm just too old to do that anymore.

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

I saw that one and considered it. Seems to me it might slip off her neck? And that I would have more adjustability with this velcro backed one that I ordered. Thx

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

Is the law in California different? How are other people getting Gabapentin so easily? I have a request in for the vet to phone me this afternoon. If she can't help, I'm getting a new vet for all of my cats.

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

I asked Roshana's vet if they could give me some Gabapentin under these circumstances, noting that I was having extreme difficulty putting her in a carrier to bring her for her exam and also trim her nails. The reply was no. Here's what they said. (Roshana's exam due date was in March.) Days...

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

Yesterday I ordered one of those mesh cat grooming sacks from Amazon along with a cat muzzle. They might be helpful. Not sure how I'd even get Roshana fully inside the sack. Not sure I'd be able to Scruff her with one hand and wrap the muzzle around her with the other hand either. Worth a try.

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

Thanks. I haven't given up hope. We're just in a rough patch relationship-wise right now and Roshana is making herself scarce. I remembered your saying that cats chewing on their nails was not natural. I just researched that and read that lots of cats do it. My cats are all indoor. It's probably...

    Unable to Trim Cat's Nails

PS- Get scratching posts for your cat. Relying on them to gnaw on their claws isn’t enough and isn’t natural. I have cat scratching posts in the loft, the living room, and two in my bedroom. All the cats use them except Roshana. She's just never been interested.
