What does your cat's name mean?

Mine are named what they actually are, although in Japanese. Mi-ke Neko: Tortoiseshell Cat Tora Neko: Tabby Cat I think "mi-ke" literally means "three color" or "three fur" or something? It's used to describe the ideal coloring in Japanese bobtails, anyway--calico. Tora means "tiger," as I...

How did your cats come to adopt you

I got Mi-ke from the Humane Society because I'd been jonesing for a cat since I (finally) moved out of my parents' house. It's like a drug craving. Mi-ke was 12 weeks old, a little tortie in an enclosure with her (black) siblings. I didn't "get to know her" or anything--I just got her. It was...

Do your Cats Have Middle Names?

Mine have the same middle name (and last name, of course)--Neko ("cat" in Japanese).

    Cat's birthdays!...

Mi-ke: May 14, 2002 Tora: March? 2006 Tora was said to be 1 when I adopted him last March, but I believe it was an estimate on their part, so I don't know his actual birthday. Either way, he's around 2 right now. Mi-ke's turning 6! I'm planning to have a joint birthday party for them.

    Where does you cat nap/sleep?

Mi-ke is currently sleeping on an old pillow that I got out to put on my computer chair. Other common places for Mi-ke or Tora are my bed, the cable box, a Cat Magnet blanket, a cardboard box full of wadded-up packing paper, and one of the cat beds. Of course, I also find them under my bed...

Eliminating without knowing? New issue with my cat..

Mi-ke did something like that once. Actually, I was finding some poops outside of the box, and I wasn't sure how they got there. Then I saw her running from the dining room to the kitchen, and she paused for a second, went, and kept running. I don't know if all the stray ones happened the same...

    "runs" while sleeping

Well heck, people do it. It's just good old-fashioned REM. But I read somewhere (which I can't cite now) that cats dream of hunting--some researchers turned off the part of the brain that prevents them from acting out the dream, and they hunted. (Don't ask how they turned it off.)

    Eep! She's too young!

I got Mi-ke when she was 12 weeks old (per her paperwork), and she'd been spayed. My previous cat was spayed later in life, once we had her, and she went into heat only a few days before the surgery, so we were getting anxious to get it done.

Milk jug rings: what's the appeal??

As I don't drink milk, I don't know how they feel about milk jug rings. But they do adore silicone bracelets. I order them from Oriental Trading Company, as it's much cheaper that way, and they adore them.

    Suckling kitty is it normal?

Mi-ke's always done it. She did it to her siblings at the shelter, and she's been doing it to me. Just this morning, in fact, she got in bed and suckled me. "They" say it's because the cat was taken away from its mother before it was ready. But I don't think that necessarily means it was too...

    Can you help

Looks like my Tora, actually--brown tabby.

    Vegan cat food?!

Just to nitpick unnecessarily ...I used to have snakes. The recommendation is to feed frozen mice rather than live. Live prey can injure a snake. There have been plenty of cases of people leaving mice in the snake's cage and the mice actually hurt or even kill the snake, and the snake just lies...

need some help decididing if i should get a friend for my cat

I'm not sure Mi-ke was lonely when I decided to get her a friend. Part of the reason I did was because I was going to be away for a couple of weeks and she'd just have a sitter, so I thought it would be nice to have someone around. She was also getting more "boring," I guess--sleeping all the...

    smurglers???

Mi-ke's always suckled on me. I should have known something was up, really, when I saw her at the shelter. She and her siblings pinned another sibling and started trying to suckle his tummy. She suckles on my chest, although not where she "ought" to be, so to speak, which obviously wouldn't fly...

What are your cats afraid of?

I haven't come across anything that scares Tora yet. Mi-ke's afraid of people she doesn't know, especially knocks on the door.

    Catnip bubbles...too funny!

Mi-ke loves those bubbles, but she doesn't seem to have a catnip response (even though she responds to catnip). She likes to check them out as they land (ideally--in my book--on her head). I like them about as much as she does (although I don't chase them, ahem). But they leave residue everywhere.

    kitties and making the bed?

Mi-ke's famous for hunting the fitted sheet as I pull it. Tora's just discovered this sort of thing, bless him. My rule is that the bed's being made, with or without them, so they'll get made into the bed if they don't move. As Tora was new to this process, he seemed to be slower to escape. When...

How did you name your cat?

Mi-ke and Tora are from the Japanese ("mi-ke neko" = tortoiseshell cat, "tora neko" = tabby cat). So they're named what they are. It limits the colors I can have, of course. I couldn't get another of either color.

    Cats and computers lol

Mi-ke loves to lie on my Powerbook keyboard sometimes. I always know when she's done it because I can hear this loud beeping from the speaker keys. I've found all sorts of weird Google searches afterwards. She's typed things into IM windows, and she's changed my homepage. It's bizarre. I always...

Why do my kittens lick my hands?

Tora likes to wash me. It's mainly my hands, but I guess that's partly because they're more easily accessible to him. He really works me over, too, for a long time, and he has a very rough tongue. But it's love. :-)
