When breeding Somalis first crossed my mind 6 years ago I also felt unsuitable because I had no interest in showing cats. For some reason I kept (and still do) feeling the pull towards breeding. My mother is the one who finally gave me the push I needed and bought me a show cat.
I finally...
I recommend going to cat shows and talking with the breeders for each of those breeds. Study those breeds, health, personality, grooming are all things to take into consideration. I don't think you should base your decision off the economy. Take the time to find the breed you really love.
Yes I will be testing my breeding cats. In my breed we test for PK Deficiency. I also test all my cats for Leukemia. I am also planning on doing blood typing.
It shouldn't matter if we give them the right answers because a breeder should not be giving breeding rights to someone unless that someone has proven themselves by showing in the alter class first. This way we are educating the responsible people and weeding out the irresponsible people.
I am not actually breeding yet. I have been waiting for almost a year now for my first breeding female and there is not one in the real near future. This is because the breeder I chose to start my line with has hardly been breeding because of the economy. I have been told by a few breeders in my...
I don't really know what to recommend. I don't know enough about the Persian history. To breed not for the standard is going to be the most difficult way to start. I personally do not recommend it.
Have you attended cat shows and looked at other longhaired breeds? Why did you decide on the Persian?
Isn't rabies fast acting? I think you would be sick by now. And the first test was negative for rabies. I would be more concerned about finding out what the alive cats have. I would take them to another vet.
I don't know where to start. All cats carry different *germs*. Bringing any new cat into an existing cat home is adding new *germs*. In stressful situations, as in adding a new cat, can flare up harboring viruses. All cats have been exposed to some sort of virus be it corona, calici, herpes...
FHV-1 vaccine is only around 56% effective. So not very effective imo. I am not sure if the vaccine would give a positive result or not. Many cats do carry herpes but I think 90% sounds a bit high.
If you read the 37 page vaccine guidelines from the American Association of Feline Practitioners...
I am guessing the health guarantee is for hereditary problems? This problem sounds like it would be impossible at this time to prove it was genetic but it does sound like it is. What is it you would like the breeder to help with? Vet costs?
