You can try pine pellet litter. It’s quite cheap as it’s used for horse bedding.
I used to use it before switching to paper pellet litter as my cat might have sensitivities to pine. But friends and family have used it with no problems.
The pine litter wasn’t dusty, except for maybe when it disintegrated into sawdust after getting wet.
We switched to paper pellet litter just in case. Also got a HEPA air filter.
Our girl is much better now after going through a round of steroids. No longer has elevated resting breath rate...
I doubt the food upset his stomach. He might've accidentally ingested something else (food scraps, bacteria from the floor, a toxic bug, etc).
Hiding, vomiting, diarrhea, and refusing the usual amount of food are bad signs. My cat went through something similar recently and needed to be...
My kitten is a large breed (Maine Coon) and seems to be hungry despite eating ~550 calories a day. She cleans every meal I give her and seems like she could eat more.
She's a perfect body condition score right now according to the chart. I can just feel her ribs, and she has a noticeable waist...
Radiologist confirmed it’s mild to moderate asthma in second kitten, and she’s been put on steroids which seems to be helping quite a bit.
The breeder has been responsive throughout the whole process, which is why I was so confused/conflicted that both animals have health issues at a young age...
You can try transitioning, but he might just eat the Tiki and leave the rest. Sometimes cats will choose what you do!
Most of the time stomach problems are caused by infection/parasites instead of food, especially if you’re feeding wet.
It’s more important that he eats at his age, so feed him what he’ll accept.
Metronidazole helps reduce gut inflammation actually, so it should help the transition if anything.
The original kitten with HCM is a Savannah. Not sure if parents are regularly tested, though I might've read somewhere that there aren't genetic tests for the breed since it's relatively new. He was referred to and diagnosed by a good cardiologist via echocardiogram and has been on heart meds...
My family bought a kitten from a breeder a year ago who had a noticeable heart murmur with his first vet checkup at around 3 months. He was diagnosed with severe HCM and a life prognosis of a year.
The breeder offered a replacement kitten, which we took (a different breed though—they have two...
I feed about 50% Zupreem Exotic Feline canned, which is about $0.30 per 100 calories. It’s marketed for exotic cats, and many breeders use it for hybrids such as Savannahs.
Cheap and allows me to add in premium foods such as Tiki Cat, Koha, Rawz, etc for the other 50% of diet. Total per day for...
I have a 5 month old Maine Coon kitten who is moderate energy and plays a couple times a day, not “off the walls” 24/7 like other kittens I hear about.
I recently bought a Da Fish (lure attachment from the same company as Da Bird), and she goes WILD over it. She ran after it so hard that she...
My research gave me the following conclusions:
Grain-free foods that have legumes (lentils, chickpeas, peas, etc) have been proven to cause heart problems in dogs
There is not yet research establishing this connection for cats
Grain-free cat foods can have high carbohydrate content by...
They’re probably experiencing supply chain issues like many brands since the start of the pandemic. There are problems getting ingredients and raw material needed for the packaging (eg aluminum for cans). Additionally, there also could be problems with manufacturing as different countries adjust...
Chewy has a helpful chart of average calories needed per pound for kittens.
According to the chart, 4lb kitten on average needs 272 calories/day, and a 5lb kitten needs 327 calories/day. So for your 4-5lb kittens anywhere between there is probably good, though people generally say to give...
Oh, also get him to the vet with a stool sample ASAP, and be very careful about sanitation in the meantime. Kittens often have parasites/worms that can be tricky to eradicate, so until you’re 100% sure kitten is parasite free from the vet, make sure you clean up any poo on surfaces/fabrics using...
I also brought home a kitten recently, so this is from my experience. Generally the advice is to keep as many things familiar as possible, since it will be stressful for kitten to be leaving home and going to a completely new place. Add to it that this your kitten is coming home a bit younger...
Thank you for all the helpful responses! I should’ve clarified that I’m not in a position to get another kitten right now, so it will have to be when she’s closer to a year old. I’ve heard Maine Coons mature slower, so hopefully she’ll still take to another cat around then.
In the meantime...
I've been reading conflicting things about having two (or more cats)--some sources say a single cat gets lonely and a cat buddy helps provide companionship, but other sources say that cats are territorial and don't need or want another cat in its home fighting for food/space/attention.
For...
I have this stainless steel one by Wopet that’s excellent. I just put it in the dishwasher to sanitize. There are two settings: you can have the bubbler or a little spring of water. It’s quiet and they usually have sales too (I think mine was <$30 during Black Friday). Also available on Amazon I...
