    Reintroduction advice needed!

You may have seen my posts before about reintroducing my two male cats together, who have been separated for quite some time now. Well, I think we are ready for in-room introductions and we are very stoked and also very nervous! We have seen JG's advice on in-room stuff, so we are going to...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

We are still site swapping daily and I haven't done the shirt trick but I figured since they are site swapping so regularly their scent is on everything. They tend to roll around on the same spots anyway. We've been trying to play and we do feedings and treats by the door but aggressor cat is a...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

So aggressor cat (the tabby) is very hyper interested in the white cat, if white cat is playing or moving too fast aggressor cat climbs the gate. This behavior hasn't subsided in over ten sessions. We try to play with him by the gate and he's mostly uninterested, he just wants to stare at white...

oh I understand! That makes sense. I will try to intercept from now on when I sense it coming. How long have your cats been separated??

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

So this isn't at the initial part of the session. We let them sniff at the start, give them a lickable treat, give them some play and then sort of "live normally". It's during the rest of the hour where they'll just sort of eyeball each other or stare, go off to eat, potty, chill and then one...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

Yes they do live on either side of the gate! We are trying to have at least 3-5 good sessions in a row with this gate before we lift it (we are currently doing 1-2 hour sessions every day. We are on our 10th one right now.) Right now either cat will run at the gate to see the other and end up...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

We’ve got a new video! Things look pretty good like this. We had to give white cat a break because he gets poop zoomies and was racing around yowling - tabby was weirded out lol. On weekends we are working on several hour long sessions a day like this, where we just chill and hang out as normal...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

Thanks for the photos! I understand now that the staring is natural and to let them be cats more. I don't understand cats (I'm a dog person, lol), so it helps to learn more about them.

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

When do you determine when we can move forward to in-room introductions? When they can be comfortable around each other after an hour? It seems like it always takes them a bit of time to get adjusted and then they'll do their own thing on the opposite side of the gate. I just don't know how to...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

That’s some good advice. I think when we do feedings we’ll just walk away and let them do their thing. Tossing treats is a little tough because they will pounce on them and spook each other.

Here is a video of the staring. He will go on like this for minutes at a time.

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

Yes this was a particularly good session with hardly any staring!! Just the first video I could get. There generally is though, I figured he was a mix of cautious/curious and that's way better than some of what I read, with hissing and growling and such.

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

Great advice here! I like the cat TV idea. Yes we usually always give dry food and hard treats in feeder toys. One of them likes the feeder toys more than the other, but they will both use them. They are both on prozac and the tabby is also on lorazapam, so I believe it's helped with his anxiety...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

From what I remember when it was happening, it did make white cat nervous and tabby would wrestle him and I know white cat didn’t like it. No crying or screaming or ugly cat noises but it didn’t usually last long. He was pursuing him quite a bit, enough for us to be uncomfortable with them being...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

Thanks for your response! The white one is about 9, the tabby 7. This was a good interaction between them and really right now the only way it gets “worse” is the tabby stares intently/will sometimes paw at the white cat. The pawing doesn’t seem aggressive, but it does scare the white one a...

Reintroduction with cats - moving forward

Hello, we are in the midst of a reintroduction of our cats after a redirected aggression incident. We are at a point now where we've got a wire gate up and we let them see each other for about 30-45 minutes in the evening during mealtime. However, the aggressor cat won't stop STARING. We feed...
