Does elevated Creatinine mean kidney disease?

While Creatinine can fluctuate with muscle mass, I would be concerned that she has been fed the same type of diet since 3 months of age and the creatinine is trending upward. Very small changes in lab value can mean large changes in kidney function. Her USG is highly concentrated- thus kidneys...

Cat peeing everywhere, not using litterbox

If he is not neutered, then this behavior is very common in intact males. if he is neutered then I would strongly recommend a vet visit. Also, just want to say this thinking is not correct. Using antibiotics when not needed is harmful. Not only due to side effects to the cat but also to the...

Seizures and phenobarbital - advice needed!!

Initially, phenobarbital can be sedating but the sedative effects do become less over time. The goal is always to use the least amount of medication that control the seizures. The difficulty is finding what each individual animal’s tolerance and needs are. Plus, phenobarbital makes it more...

    Persistent URI

Unfortunately, culturing nasal discharge has very minimal clinical relevance. There are many natural occurring flora bacteria in the nasal passages and the culture is often overgrown with these flora bacteria. As far as diagnosing a polyp, I sedate and perform an deep oral exam. Typically, the...

Samantha - leaking poop after colon resection

Omg! What an ordeal for you and Sam. Several thoughts, the colon’s main purpose is to reabsorb fluid/dehydrate stool so it sounds like to me that loose stools may be expected but hopefully the incontinence will subside. In the vet ICU, we commonly used Boudreaux's Butt Paste. If she cannot lick...

    FIP Felv advice please

I’m so sorry for your loss. As far as FIP, the disease is caused by a mutation in a (feline) coronavirus. The coronavirus is a common virus that causes GI signs during initial infection. Many cats recover without treatment. However, for a small population of cat, the virus mutates at some point...

Has anyone had issues with Veraflox antibiotic or other fluoroquinolones?

I would contact your vet. But it does seem like she is receiving a high dose. Maybe your vet has a reason behind this??

Has anyone had issues with Veraflox antibiotic or other fluoroquinolones?

So, choosing an antibiotic is complicated by the fact that the antibiotic needs to concentrated in urine. (Meaning that it needs to get to the site of infection which in this case is the bladder) Not all antibiotics are concentrated and excreted in the urine - So even when the sensitivity comes...

Has anyone had issues with Veraflox antibiotic or other fluoroquinolones?

Understand your concern. My kitty had CKD and the dose was lowered to compensate for decreased renal function. I don’t remember what the dose was but that it was lower than the normal amount. Have you talked to your vet about your concerns?

Losing weight without changing the diet

Don’t starve an overweight cat. Cats are good at hunger strikes and trying to starve them into liking a food doesn’t work.

Huge strain on veterinary clinics post-pandemic

“With a full schedule, Blout, the Fayette County veterinarian, said she has had issues with people making appointments, finding an earlier appointment elsewhere, and then neglecting to cancel. It’s led Blout to implement a “no-call, no-show” policy, and charging customers who don’t keep...

Has anyone had issues with Veraflox antibiotic or other fluoroquinolones?

The fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics have been know to cause retinopathy/blindness in cats. However, Veraflox is a cat only fluoroquinolone and blindness has not been shown with it’s use. I think the warning is there because it is in the same class as Baytril which has caused blindness...

2 year old cat with kidney disease?

I feel you with the kidney diets and dry food. Totally counterproductive. I feed Feline Natural’s and 4 of my 5 kitties like it. They like the King Salmon and The Venison the best. Phosphorus is 270mg/100kcal and 320mg/100kcal, respectively. Not the lowest but a good balance of ingredients and...

How to deal with flea infestation

While expensive, probably the only way to win the flea war is to have all animals on flea control for several months. I would suggest using Revolution or Cheristin. Unfortunately, the live fleas you see are only the tip of the pyramid. There are 90% more fleas at immature life stages that you...

2 year old cat with kidney disease?

Thanks. The is no door. The green are handles from the tote. I used a razor blade to cut the opening and the sandpaper to smooth around the opening. The material cut relatively well. The totes are Sterilite 34 Gallon. I have found them a Target and Menards.

2 year old cat with kidney disease?

What a handsome fella! Did your vet mention the protein his urine? Cats should not have protein in urine and generally even with CKD proteinuria is not common. (More of a dog type kidney disease). Protein can be a poor prognostic indicator and cause further damage to kidneys. 😥 Regarding...

    Subcutaneous Fluids for Kidney Disease

Sounds like you are doing a great job with Happy! SQ fluids can technically go anywhere (within the sq space). I find the easiest to tent the skin at the scruff. Don’t worry if it’s in front or behind the shoulder blades.

    Recurrent Sinus Infection/Ataxia

Definitely talk to your vet regarding your concerns. There are options for palliative care if cancer is truly the problem. Best wishes.

Update on Lucy--got the bloodwork results (actual numbers)

So yes, unfortunately your kitty does have significant kidney impairment. Was a urinalysis also performed? While there is benefit of the kidney diets with this advanced disease (canned being preferred), I would also ask about a phosphorus binder. That phosphorus is quite elevated. Phosphorus of...
