I would consider Feliway (the plug-in anxiety scented plug contraption for cats). It has helped 3 of my cats in the past, and they were all talkers! Siamese, in fact. Totally recommend! Amazon has them, so you don't even have to go to Petco to get one.

Sounds like an increase in histamine. That would preclude a more serious reaction. The Benadryl recommendation is one to look into. I'm not sure what product version of Benadryl (or dose) to use...as in tablet, liquigel, pediatric, or some other version....to use is for a cat; ask your vet...
