What Happens When You Adopt Instead Of Shop — Fiona’s Journey!

Hi everyone! I initially made this account to ask for advice, as I had just adopted my first cat from a shelter. I had some issues early on, but it’s smooth sailing now. Mostly, I wanted to make this post to demonstrate just how radically a shelter kitty can change once she finds her forever...

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

Oh whoops, I didn't fully clarify there. She'll get bored with the feather after a few minutes, but she'll still want to play her game with me--when she actually plays, she ends up tired out and unwilling to play with anything! She'll sit down and start cleaning herself for a nap. But yes, this...

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

I agree. It's probably not ideal, but I also think the pouncing has a root cause in some issues from her past that we're working to overcome. I'll proceed with caution, try to limit the game and get her focused on toys instead, but play sometimes, ideally as the other issues start to clear up...

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

That’s great to hear! God, he sounds adorable, I’m hoping to get my girl to this level of trust and playfulness. Sounds like there’s no bad behavior associated with it?

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

That’s kind of what I was thinking. And there are times she does play gently! It’s sort of a mixed bag, sometimes she gets careless with her claws, but even then, when she does catch me, it’s not anywhere near enough to draw blood or hurt me. I’ll see if I can balance it between your advice and...

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

Sure, I’ll try fetch! I’ve tried a laser pointer and it really depends on her mood. Other toys, including catnip ones, she’ll bat at once or twice or pounce on if I wiggle them around a corner, but she has little interest most of the time. I think it’s a combination of being a nervous cat still...

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

Thanks for the reply! Ok, I’ll try to get her focused on a wand toy or the shoestring she likes when she wants to play tag with me, no big deal. For the other behaviors, we have a generally good relationship, yeah. I adopted her from a terrible county shelter that knew nothing about her, and...

Are We Playing Tag, Or Is She Hunting Me?

I adopted Fiona nearly three months ago, and because I think she had a little bit of past trauma, it's been a little rough. I think I've eased her through the majority of her nervousness, though, and she's mostly comfortable in my bedroom. One thing that's been difficult is playtime. I've never...

    My Cat Isn't Drinking Enough

I had a cat who loved to drink out of the faucet, to the point where she didn't even want the water, she just wanted to play in it. Every time someone would walk into the kitchen, she would happily hop up on the counter and chirp at them until we turned on the faucet for her, held it up, and let...

What Is It About Bleach Fumes???

My family's old cat would do this. She loooooved bleach. My mom would mop and my cat would go wild, running around, rolling on the floor, getting high. The same with chlorine. When we would get out of the hot tub or pool, she would latch onto our legs and lick us until we finally shook her off...

    Experience With Traumatized Cats—any Hope?

A few pictures, as an additional thank you! She loves to sleep on my bed...but only when I’m not in the room. If I come in or sit down, she’ll jump down. Same thing with the fancy cat tree I bought. She won’t touch it 95% of the time, but I’ve woken up in the middle of the night to see her...

    Experience With Traumatized Cats—any Hope?

Thank you for all the nice comments! The reassurance is so needed; I was fairly certain the best recourse would be patience, but it’s fantastic to hear that other people have similar stories with happy journeys and happy endings. The little steps we’ve taken so far have been so rewarding. My...

    Experience With Traumatized Cats—any Hope?

One quick edit: she has sought me out for comfort when she was sick. She had a bad bout of hairballs and constipation, and wasn’t eating or drinking for a few days. In the beginning, when she was throwing up, she was at my side constantly, even after I offered her food. I’ve had well-socialized...

    Experience With Traumatized Cats—any Hope?

Hi everyone! This got pretty long, but it was as much a venting post as it is a detailed request for advice/reassurance for a new cat owner with a PTSD baby. I’ve been having some troubles making my new cat comfortable. I adopted Fiona about two months ago and have been doing my best to...

    So Worried About Fiv

My recently adopted cat tested positive for FIV, but they don't know whether it's because she was vaccinated previously (she had also been spayed before coming to the county shelter I adopted her from) or if she actually has FIV. Nonetheless, my vet assured me it's nothing to be worried about...

    Sick/constipated 6 Year Old Cat

The vets can check things out but in the meantime, like I said, that Laxatone or petroleum jelly should help a lot. If she’s really constipated, the stool won’t reabsorb very much water and make it easier to pass, so your only options, from what I’ve read, are to lubricate her up on the inside...

    Sick/constipated 6 Year Old Cat

Take her to the vet at least for a check up and some subcutaneous fluids. I adopted my cat about two months ago and she’s been fine—until this past weekend. She stopped eating or drinking, continually tried to throw up a hairball, and wouldn’t use the litter box. Our other cat had been having...

2yo Tabby Hairball Issue, Not Eating Or Drinking

Thanks for the replies everyone! I took her to the vet last night and they performed an x-ray, which showed she was indeed constipated. They gave her some fluids and set an appointment for today for an enema. The fluids were a huge help. She perked up almost immediately and became extremely...

Kitten Going To Get Neutered Soon, How To Prepare?

We had two kittens get fixed, one girl and one boy. The boy had an easier time, as it's a simpler surgery, but he was still a little bit wired from the medicine/anesthesia. We were told to not let him climb and jump up onto things for a few days, which was a herculean task, as all he wanted to...

2yo Tabby Hairball Issue, Not Eating Or Drinking

I think nausea or even just feeling out of it could be a good explanation, and I'm hoping that's why. She still seemed very subdued when I left for work this morning after she threw up, so in an ideal situation, she is just overcoming the nausea and she'll be able to eat/drink soon.
