Has anyone successfully trained a cat to not go on the counter and/or dinner table?

I hope this thread is helpful if anyone else needs to train a cat to not go on the counter or table in the future! It was a lot of work but it's great to be able to cook and eat meals without needing to worry about my cat jumping onto a hot stove top or getting into the food when my back is turned.

Has anyone successfully trained a cat to not go on the counter and/or dinner table?

Hello again, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who responded to this thread with tips, advice, and encouragement. 1.5 years later, my cat has been trained to not go on the counter or dinner table :) It was definitely a war of attrition as some people said it would be! I do still...

Help! Finicky eater, addicted to dry food

Thank you for all the tips, they're super helpful! Will try these things with Zephyr as well if he has a bad spell. I've also discovered a new method that helps - 10-20 mins of playtime before feeding seems to give him a better appetite so I've been doing that as much as I can.

Help! Finicky eater, addicted to dry food

Yeah Dr. Elsey's formula is maybe a bit too good! As far as healthy dry food goes it's definitely at the top. As if things weren't bad enough with my cat (his name is Zephyr! :) ) being picky, there is currently a shortage of Dr. Elsey's so I haven't been able to buy more :bawling2: I'm...

Help! Finicky eater, addicted to dry food

Thanks for the link! I've actually seen this video already and I've tried this method but it doesn't work for my cat :( Getting less dry food does not motivate him to eat more wet food - he will just eat less and lose weight. Exactly the same thing happened with my cat and Dr. Elsey's Clean...

Help! Finicky eater, addicted to dry food

I am dealing with an extremely finicky eater and just about at my wits' end! After he turned 1, my cat went from being a voracious eater who would gobble down anything to an extremely picky eater. I familiarized him with different types and brands of food (canned, homemade raw, commercial raw...

My Zephyr is also attracted to dark, small, and forbidden spaces. It’s like opening any kind of cabinet or closet creates a vacuum and he is instantly drawn to it. He has been accidentally shut in a closet and cabinet before (fortunately he rustles around enough for me to realize it quickly) and...

I've been having the same struggle with my cat, I was wondering if it might get better when he's 2 years old but looks like I'd better get prepared to entertain him for another 15 years 😂 I like your toilet paper stuffing idea, will try that with my cat! He also loves ripping up paper and has...

Looking for your best, most creative enrichment ideas

This is a constant struggle that I have had as well! The main thing that's worked for me is introducing something new. Whether it's a toy or a new pot of cat grass or something mundane like a cardboard box or paper grocery bag, my cat loves to play with anything new that comes into my home...

Cat eating less than recommended amount after 1 year of age

Update on Zephyr, he's been eating around ~200 calories per day in wet and raw food by himself for a few days but I'm still finding I have to coax him to finish the food by sprinkling treats on it. He also seems to want me there watching him eat to finish all the food. After the food aversion...

    Does your cat groom you?

My cat likes to lick my hair when it's wet after I've showered and I've also noticed that he will try to lick my injuries if I get a cut (I don't let him touch broken skin though!)

Cat eating less than recommended amount after 1 year of age

Even though he is receptive to assist feeding it is still a huge mess! I've been wearing the food as well and I'm having one heck of a time cleaning after every feeding. After this I am fully convinced that a cat can starve itself to a point where it's super harmful if not to death. This is...

Cat eating less than recommended amount after 1 year of age

Thank you both for the advice! @mrsgreenjeens your recommendation to see a vet ended up being spot on because the very same day of my last post, Zephyr stopped eating altogether. I took him to the vet when he didn't touch his food or even show interest in treats. He got an abdominal exam...

Cat eating less than recommended amount after 1 year of age

Update: I tried hand-feeding freeze-dried raw food and air-dried food as a supplement to the two usual servings of wet food but unfortunately after eating the dry food, my cat won't touch the second serving of wet food :( It's like he basically hits a wall after the 100 calorie mark and doesn't...

Cat eating less than recommended amount after 1 year of age

Thanks for the input and I agree that 110-140 calories is low. I will get him some freeze dried food and try using it as treats since he seems to think any food coming from my hands is somehow better than the food in his bowl. He enjoys clicker training so this would be a good way to sneak some...

Cat eating less than recommended amount after 1 year of age

My Russian Blue Zephyr turned 1 year old in January. At the age of about 1 year and two months, he started eating much less than he did before. He used to be able to guzzle almost two 6 oz cans of cat food per day as a kitten but now he is probably eating only 3-4 oz of canned food per day. I...

    Cat empathy

Glad to hear you are feeling better and hoping things will get easier for you ❤ Like mentioned above, if Juno is still a kitten it may be that she doesn't quite understand what's happening and hasn't fully developed her sense of empathy yet. I have found with my pets of all different species...

    Kitten biting

Thanks for the input everyone! I would definitely agree that boredom is a big part of it. I live in a small one bedroom apartment and he has really settled in and explored the place thoroughly now. He has a 3-level cat tree at the window but I think he would benefit from more things to climb...
