My cat is surprisingly gentle most times lol. He will sort of caress my face with his paw until i open my eyes then he will start licking and giving me little love nips on the face. Then rarely he'll bite(not nip unfortunately) my ear until I stir.

Your kitty sounds like a very smart one! Do you have him on a sort of schedule? I feed my cat at 8pm every night and around 7:30 he will either bring me a toy(usually a ponytail holder haha) to play fetch or he'll peer around the corner waiting for a round of hide and seek tag! And we keep that...
