It's the best recipe out there, because it's effectively gone through the best possible feeding trial: Dr. Pierson has fed this to her cats for decades, and I assume she's diligent about cat care and health monitoring. This is WAY better than AAFCO feeding trials, which is a small # of cats...
OMG I feel your pain, Feebys.
I had a cat with that same problem, needed emergency surgery to remove bladder stones. On a Friday night. Always has to be Friday night...
It's been a long road but he's doing well now. The vet put him on amitryptiline, and he stayed on it for several months...
Sounds like too much work. Find a treat they like, crumble it up and sprinkle it on the food as a topper.
Whole Life and Fresh is Best treats are favored by my cats. One cat also loves nutritional yeast and (for god knows what reason) Trader Joe's yellow corn tortilla chips. And, also for...
Instinct is 20% bone. I'm amazed that there are enough cats who can tolerate it to keep them in business. Mine sure couldn't.
See my post in the "emergency canned food" thread. I'm not aware of any freeze dried options with a reasonable amount of bone.
The "better diet" you're looking for...
Glad you got through the storms ok!
All the freeze dried options have way too much bone for my cats, which makes them throw up in addition to some serious medical issues (thankfully all now in the past). So I stock Honest Kitchen Grace as the backup food. The only drawback is the 10%...
Hard question to answer....
I think what I would do is coordinate some diet trials with my vet, and then go to the USDA websites to estimate the phosphorus content of the different meat options.
Another option is to feed whatever meat you like, but then give your kitty a phosphorus binder...
So sorry, this sounds like a difficult and emotionally wrenching situation....
I think you will have a better sense of which way to go, but if it were me: I think I would put her back on the prednisone and work on getting her diet stable with frequent meals, and her symptoms resolved. I'd do...
That's almost a contradiction in terms :-)
Sometimes a different source for raw food can make a cat turn up their noses at it. Or, maybe the batch wasn't fresh, or freezer-burned - my cats are very sensitive to that. Or a change in the premix you're using. Did any of that happen? Oddly, I've...
I'm not familiar with "castle family" - what does that mean?
Definitely include pork if your cat will tolerate it. My cats love the stuff. And your wallet will love it too - it's almost as cheap as chicken.
Maybe not worry so much about the bone pieces? Your cat will get used to them. I...
I had to learn how to leash walk my cats. The most important tip: always stand behind the cat and keep a good hold on the leash. If you pull the leash tight from behind the cat, they can't wriggle out. If you are in front of the cat, they can pull out in seconds by backing up.
Maybe a catio...
Word of caution about changing your cats routine while you're away...having you suddenly not there is hard enough on them without also changing their diet. If you can't find a sitter who will feed them their usual raw diet, then at least make sure that canned is in their regular rotation. And...
Check your cat's teeth? Gum disease may be the source of the blood. Or, maybe there was a small piece of bone causing issues in the mouth/esophagus. Or even a toy your cat chewed on.
Blood from a GI source is not usually pink - it will be black and tarry. So I doubt that's the source. If...
EZ Complete may be a good premix option, as it uses ground eggshells for calcium. Ditto for Alnutrin (for meat & organs).
Another tip is to add extra eggs to the food. Egg white adds high quality protein and it's very low in phosphorus. The egg yolk helps with hairballs and vomiting.
Freezer-safe Mason jars here. The recent concerns about microplastics make me try to minimize plastic packaging.
I don't bother trying to portion into daily amounts, especially because freezer space is limited and it takes too darn long. I just pack as much into each jar as it will hold, and...
Sure, could be that too. I've noticed though that he was less excited about it the last time I pulled out the bag, so maybe it was also about the novelty.
The all time (and durable) favorite munchie treat is catnip though. I have a planter of it growing just outside the door. I take my cats...
p.s. I order from Hare Today and Viva Raw. Hare Today is similar to raw feeding miami, which I've also ordered from on occasion. Viva Raw makes complete food, which I'm using now for convenience. I don't like relying on it full time though, because of the psyllium husk they add to it.
Just feed a mixture of foods they like and tolerate well. I give my cats chicken, turkey, duck and rabbit, with occasional beef, goat, and pork. Pork and duck are higher in fat, while turkey, goat, and rabbit are lower. Totally fine.
The "low fat" myth is...a myth, which has been very bad...
Super interesting! No, no blockage and very unlikely he's got any nutritional deficiencies. In fact he just got a clean bill of health from the vet including a full set of senior labs.
Thinking maybe it smells a little like Honest Kitchen Grace, which he also likes.
Cats! That's why we love...
He just did it again! I hadn't taken the chips out of the pantry in a couple weeks, but got a hankering for a quick snack. Sure enough, Charlie was right there jumping, meowing, pawing at the bag etc. Totally bizarre. Of course, he also snacked last night on the weatherstripping around the...
I almost never eat corn chips but I had a bag of tortilla chips left after hosting a visitor. To my surprise, my Siberian cat Charlie went ballistic when he saw the corn chip. Meowing, pawing at it, jumping on me etc until I let him have it. He ate it and looked incredibly happy afterwards...
