I'm so sorry for your loss. My baby boy passed on the evening of January 1/morning of January 2, and he too was almost 17 (he would have also turned 17 exactly a month from when he died). Like Lucy, my cat also saw me through major milestones in my life, walking with me from young adulthood to...
I posted an earlier thread about my baby cat dying in the middle of the night. I continue to be haunted by the fact that he died in a carrier on the way to the 24-hour emergency vet to get euthanized.
After I heard these terrible howls from him (the last sounds I’d hear from him) at 1:00 a.m...
Do you think we tell ourselves that our cats were happy with us in their last moments to make ourselves feel better? For instance, there's no way we can know that the death wasn't painful or if they were in fear, right? Then how would we know that they were content to be with us at the end?
Thank you. I've had friends who also said their cats also howled in a similar fashion when they passed. The sound of it to human ears is just so haunting.
The howls at the end continue to haunt me. We actually have a video (cat cam) of how the whole thing went down, and, for some reason, I looked back at it last night, and it broke me. I'm not sure why I wanted to hear those howls again.
Today I feel terrible putting him in the carrier. I...
Thanks for the words. But do we know if he suffered? That is my biggest fear, that he suffered and was in pain. I wanted to spare him that.
Those human deaths that you've witnessed, did those people come back to tell you about the numbness?
My baby cat died tonight on the way to the emergency vet. He had been battling chronic IBD for the past two years. In the past few months, he was rapidly losing weight but still ate. Throughout December, he appeared much weaker (unsteady footing), but he still had an appetite.
Things went a bit...
When my elderly (16.5+ years) cat eats kibble, he always makes this really unpleasant and irritating grinding sound with his tongue. See the video here.
I once described this sound to my vet, and he suggested it was a sound cats made when they're nauseous. I'm not sure how accurate this is...
An update for you all. I slept on the sofa last night so I could be around for my boy. He yowled throughout the night to ask for food, but I didn't want to wake up to give him any because I was so tired.
This morning, I did give him some Fancy Feast slurry, and he lapped it all up.
I also gave...
Thank you, kind friend. My partner and friends also told me that hospitalizing him, even for temporary relief, doesn't sound like a great option, especially if it involves overnight stays and being alone in an unfamiliar place. Unless it gives him months and months of additional good quality of...
He not eating much right now, only Fancy Feast flaked tuna treats. I've tried Churu, all kinds of wet food, even his favorite Greenies, but he's not taking anything. :(
I haven't tried buprenorphine for pain yet. He doesn't seem in pain yet (no ears back, just sleeping, mostly), but by the time he gets there, I think I would've made a decision. :(
His main vet is on leave until the end of the month, but the backup vet did mention that if he's still not eating, I could consider (1) hospitalizing him or (2) euthanasia. Hospitalization would involve giving him IV fluids and a possible feeding tube, but, to be honest, I don't want to go that...
Update. Thanks, dear friends and kitty lovers, for sharing your thoughts. I have an update to share with you all, although I'm not sure this really resolves anything. Just looking for a few thoughts and suggestions for next steps, based on your own experience with a senior kitty living with IBD...
I am writing this because my baby boy, my first born, hasn't been eating for about two days. He's also been throwing up consistently for the past two weeks.
He was diagnosed with IBD in October 2020. He's been living with it for almost two years. It's been up and down. We're currently on...
He's eating the Vital Essentials! Yay. The rabbit smells like something else. I don't know how cats find it palatable, ha!
The vet prescribed me Cerenia, but recommended I only use it when he is in one of his vomiting spells. I only give him 1/4 tablet at a time.
The vet didn't say anything...
Thanks for your quick reply. I was following Krista’s story for a while and am getting emotional thinking about it. Cats are gifts.
I’ve tried all kinds of proteins. He did really well when he was first diagnosed. He ate Natural Instinct limited ingredient dry rabbit food and was taking 1 ml of...
