Well, for one I can ease your worries by saying you do not need to switch from 'kitten' food to 'adult' food. They are just marketing ploys and not much else. I agree with others that the dry food is most likely the culprit for your boy's tummy issues. Dry food is just really hard on cats...

Well, yea, I meant under normal circumstances I can't see a reason to buy a front loader. If you've got a bitty closet and need to stack, front loading is the only way you can go.

It looks like your front loader is different than most. Most have a plastic flap that keeps water sealed inside and it must constantly be cleaned or mold will start to grow. Either way, they make top loaders that are water efficient now, so there is no reason in my mind to buy a front loader.

I think it's just part of the game; if you have food being made by big machines, you may get different results with different batches. It may also depend on the quality of the ingredients that went into that batch.
