I have tried everything for him, cat food, tuna and chicken. It didn’t matter to him what I bought he showed no interest. He smells food cries and walks away. I bought a high calorie boosts no interest. He wanted food at 230am so I got up and gave him wet food. He eats a little but that’s it. He’s drinking water. He’s on an appetite stimulant. Sad to say he’s starving to death. I made the call this week to bring him in for the big cat nap upto heaven and then cancelled but as I sit here and watch him I think it’s time to let him go. He shows interest in the outdoors but this ailment he has had for 3 weeks now doesn’t seem to be getting better. As much I pray for a miracle I am at peace with letting him go. It’s just so hard he’s almost 10. My first boy cat who means the world to me. I think he’s ready to go to. My beloved sweet boy. I wish he didn’t feel so cruddy.

Discuss a feeding tube with the vet. A feeding tube makes it easy to get watered down canned food and medicines into the cat. An appetite stimulant may be helpful, too.

Some suggestions to try:

Has the vet run blood work and other diagnostic tests? What does the vet think the cause of the inappetance is? Are the cat's teeth ok? Dental problems can be painful and a cat may be unwilling to eat. If the vet has no idea, seek out another vet.

Gosh, I just finished reading your other threads to see if he had any kind of diagnosis and see that he doesn't. If you only had some idea of what was wrong, then you could have an E-tube inserted to feed him to get him over this hump, IF it's just a really bad infection :sigh:. But if it's not, then you probably wouldn't want to put him through that :frown:. I did see somewhere that you thought it might be Leukemia. What makes you think that? They can test for that...did they? Also, shouldn't his blood results indicate if there is an infectionsomewhere? Did they check for an obstruction? Or if he has something going on with his mouth that is preventing him from eating? What about pancreatitis? Cats in pain often won't eat, bet I'm guessing your Vet has checked for everything.

Have you tried warming up the stinkiest wet food you can find? How about using toppers? FortiFlora is Kitty Crack for some cats. Parmesan cheese (from the green can) the same, for certain cats.

Have you looked at his gums lately? Are they turning yellow? Cats who do not eat enough can get Hepatic Lipidosis, and when that occurs, then they actually can't eat, or whenever they do, it makes them sick. Happened to one of ours and he ended up with a feeding tube. It is a very dangerous illness and I'm wondering if he's in the beginning stages of it and if that's what might be causing his nausea at this point. Just guessing, really. Grasping at straws. Of course, that still doesn't pinpoint what caused him to lose his appetite in the first place.

Another question for you. Have you tried syringing some pureed cat food directly into the side of his mouth to get some nourishment into him. Sometimes it takes an "assist" to get them started eating again. You could mix a little water or even goats milk with a pate style food until it's liquid enough to suck up into a syringe, then slowly eject it into his cheek pocket. And with that high calorie paste, you could try to swipe it on the roof of his mouth, right up against his front teeth (not too much at a time though) so he doesn't have much choice but to lick and swallow.

Other than that, just keep trying different types and flavors of cat food. You might even try some off the wall flavors he's never had before. duck, turkey, lamb, rabbit, beef, etc. If you give him any human meat, just don't use any seasonings at all. OH, and you could try feeding him scrambled or boiled eggs. Some cats love eggs.

I know what you're going through, believe me. I've had three kidney cats who've been though the "I'm not going to eat ever again" phase. I did find what worked somewhat well with the last one was feeding very small meals 8 or 9 times a day, including in the middle of the night. All she would eat was about one tablespoon of food per meal, if that much. But it worked for us and kept her going for several months. (and she WAS on appetite stimulants)

Thanks I should mention. Vet has run blood work no problem with his kidneys. His list 2 pounds in less than 3 weeks. He used to weigh 11 pounds but now weighs 6 pounds. No diabetes. Vet originally thought could be bacterial but he’s not responding. His tummy rumbles quite loud. At times he appears nauseous. I took him to 2 vets. The vet he currently is seeing says large weight loss puts cancer at the top of the list. He was running a fever a few weeks ago but last time he was checked his temp is normal. At times he just doesn’t seem comfortable he moves around.

Now that you mentioned no both vets didn’t say it was his pancreas.

Low B12 levels can cause weight loss. The vet can check for that with a specific blood test.

Thank you all I can’t tell you thank you enough for your insights. A true blessing. The more I read and review his symptoms the more I believe it’s pancreatic infection. I have asked the original vet for his blood work . They originally had a hard time getting blood from because he was so dehydrated. That blood work only came back saying he was anemic, high white blood cell count and very low glucose. He was tested afterwards for diabetes and his glucose levels were normal. His kidneys didn’t show they were the problem. It’s come on so quickly. Today, I gave him fluids and watched him drink a ton of fluids. I also gave him an appetite stimulant which didn’t do anything so when he came downstairs and started meowing I decided to give him a liquid painkiller the vet prescribed. He promptly took a nap. Came downstairs again and appeared hungry so I opened up a can of tuna and watched him drink most of the tuna water. His sister Gracie came downstairs now both of them are sitting by the open patio door with screen chirping at the birds. He keeps surprising me every day.

Glad that he appears to be feeling a little better, but he still needs to eat. Have you discussed your thoughts with your Vet? What did they say? Is he eating anything yet? Any of the tuna you gave him or did he just drink up the tuna juice? Did you try to assist feed him anything?

I tried giving him high calorie cat food paste he didn’t like it. I left a voicemail with the vet waiting on call back. He hasn’t eaten any food today. But he did have a large bowel movement today which surprised me. I’m going to look for more food to tempt him. He seems to get bored with food constantly looking for options. Friend mentioned Friskies soups going to look for them.

Take a look at the links in post number 2 above, there are some excellent ideas for food.

As mentioned, assist feeding, from using your finger, a spoon, a popsicle stick, to a syringe or tube, gives you a lot of ways to get food into a reluctant cat.
