Pooker is a 17 year old male domestic short hair cat who is diabetic and needs insulin shots 2x/day. He also takes Benazepril 5mg once in the AM. He is also arthritic. When I feed him treats, groom him, pet him, ...basically when I do anything that would make him happy or excited he makes this weird throaty 2 second growl. It's very bizarre and hard to describe. Also, when I put my ear to his body to hear him breathe, I hear a wheezing kinda noise as if it is labored. I want to know why he makes that weird growl noise though. It's close to sounding like a belch. I don't know. Does anyone know what that is?

Hi. Is this a new development? And, how long has he been on Benazepril? I have heard about labored breathing being a possible allergic reaction to this med - don't know if the breathing you are describing is tied to the throaty growl, but it could be?? On the opposite hand, long term use of Benazepril can cause some digestive issues - could he be burping from some gastric issues associated to the med??

No. It's not a purr. It's so frustrating because I can't describe the noise. He is on the floor 6 feet away from me and I can hear his breathing. It's like cute wheezing noises but I know that the sound is something bad. I'm in tears. His eyes are very cloudy too. This is heart breaking. I don't know how long he has been on the benzepril. This is actually my sister's cat but she moved in a few months ago with all 5 of her cats because the dimwit got evicted from her house. That's a whole different ball of yarn.

My Emerson has seasonal allergies that just kicked in yesterday. He has been crackly/wheezy, and has a coughing fit once or twice a day. Maybe it's something you could bring up to the vet.

The cloudy eyes at his age is reason enough to take him to the vet to have him looked over - then, you can ask about the noises he is making. Perhaps, the vet will actually hear it for themselves, which would help with trying to make a diagnosis.

Geriatric cats can actually go downhill quite fast. When was his last vet appointment? My last cat was diabetic and also had arthritis as a senior, among other health issues. We took her in at least 2-3 times per year.

It turns out that he has a respiratory infection. Plus it is the fact that he is getting old. The other day he was laying down in the bathroom and he wouldn't move. I picked him up to try and make him walk but he just withered to the floor. I thought it was "his time". I lied down next to him for an hour just petting him and crying, and kissing his head. An hour later he gets up and climbed the stairs to get a drink. I was like??? It's amazing how our furry friends make their way to such a deep place in our hearts.

Yes, it is. And no matter how we condition our minds and hearts that one day they may be gone ahead of us, it is still extremely painful to think about it.
