Maggots In Food, What Should I Do?

A few weeks ago I changed my cat's wet food to Purina Pate. They began throwing up about the same time, but I did not think much of it initially. It wasn't often and never a lot, I thought it might be from outside adventures. However, today I opened a new can and found maggots inside the meat. Now I am pretty freaked out. I have contacted the manufacturer so they know about the issue. But I want to know if there is anything I need/should do for my cats. I'm very worried they might have something wrong internally now.

Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated

I think you should also contact the FDA and ask that they investigate. Or at least inform them. I would also contact your vet and demand that Purina cover any vet costs as a result of this.

I’m sorry this happened to your kitties.

I'll work on that, thank you.

Luckily they're just as energetic as they usually are!

That is absolutely disgusting :barfgreen: I'm so sorry that happened to you. I agree with Azazel. Hopefully Purina gave you a refund.

Where did you buy the food from? It's a good idea to let the store or online site know so they are aware of the issue in case other owners complain about the bad food. Provide the lot / batch number and expiration date of the affected can of food. The entire batch may be affected. I'd take pictures of the can, batch number, etc and the maggots in the food.

That makes sense, thank you! I'll contact the store ASAP

Maggots can't live in a sealed can, so it must have been popped or cracked somewhere. That doesn't have anything to do with what brand it is. Contact the place you bought it from so they can identify where the damage occurred and avoid it in the future. Or do you mean there were dead maggots? Can you post some pictures?

I would post pics. Some purina includes whole pieces of rice in their cans so if they weren’t moving they were probably that. And living maggots can’t live inside a sealed can like willowy said. The food is cooked inside the can at extreme temps and not opened again so unless there was a hole in the can there’s no way living maggots could have been in it. It would have also reeked to high heavens if there was a hole in the can. I’ve smelt many many broken cans of cat and dog food in my day and it’s not something that is considered a normal canned food smell.

This is a good point. And then there's also fat: I remember seeing more than one thread where people mistook clumps of fat for insects!

Oh, wow, yeah. I got a Chewy order once that the FedEx guy must have been a bit rough with, because 2 cans were popped. I wasn't out of food yet so I just shoved the boxes into the garage until I needed them so I didn't see the open cans. After about 3 days things were getting. . .interesting! Took me a while to figure out where the smell was coming from. . .
