Hi guys just joined today for some advice as I'm not sure what else to do or if there is even anything that can be done, so August 1st I went and picked up a "16 week old" snow bengal, from a TICA registered cattery..from the beginning I noticed she was rather small, but her mother was also quite petite, I noticed she had a bit of a wet poopy bum, didn't think much of it.. as she was still pretty young and I know kittens can be messy, even on the ride home she had extremely bad smelly gas, her breeder had mentioned she gave her eggs the day before, so I assumed it was that, for 3 days she was having very bad gas..with wet farts and diarrhea, we were barley able to hold her as her bum would just drip diarrhea all over us, the couch, bed.. everything, we picked her up Friday and my vet was not open till Monday, Brought her in Monday and had her vaccination card with her as well, she had been dewormed but with a very weak not so great brand, so we did it again, and she was put on metronidazole for the inflammation, it seemed to help with the gas, not so much the diarrhea, took her back for the rest of her shots, and they were put off as the diarrhea had not stopped, she was put on the same pills for 5 days more, still the symptoms had not changed too much.. went back for her shots and she did receive them, I was in contact with another woman that received a kitten from the same cattery, come to find out her kitten tested positive for giardia... I told my vet this and we had her treated for giardia and received a 10 day does twice as strong of the metronidazole.. in between her doses I made sure to clean and sanitize all of her things, gave her fresh litter, bleached the pan etc .. she finished the medication about a week ago and up until today everything seemed great ..and now today she is back to the very bad gas, wet farts and diarrhea.... I dont know what else to do, she is on royal canin kitten, I have spend over 300 in vet bills and she was already a 1500 dollar cat.... I'm beginning to get very upset with this situation not just for me.. it is very uncomfortable for her as well.. she always cries to poop and is having blood from straining as well.. any ideas would be appreciated.. I'm beginning to think this may be a life long condition sadly..

Have your vet run a fecal PCR test. Tritrichomonas foetus is often misdiagnosed as giardia (the other kitten). The symptoms sound like classic Tf symptoms. If that is truly the problem, the breeder may not even be aware of the parasite as some cats show no symptoms and most breeders don't test for it. In fact a lot of vets are still learning about it since it the trichomonads were only molecularly identified as tritrichomonas foetus in 2001. I was discussing it with my vet since I was writing an article about it and he was not up on the preferred method of diagnosis. There have been studies that show the prevalence of the parasite in Bengals and Siamese seems to be higher than other breeds. Granted the pool of cats were small that were tested. Only Ronidazole has been found to work on this but it only has a 61% efficacy. Good luck. Your baby is gorgeous!

If all labs come back normal, try some Fortiflora. That worked wonders when I first adopted my baby at 16 weeks old (someone abandoned her at the pound). When I first brought her home, it took a week or two for her to get used to new food and to learn how to properly clean herself, which my older kitty happily showed her. The Fordiflora firmed up her stools, and she's been fine ever since

Okay thankyou I will look in to that, is it something you are having to give her for the rest of her life?

nope, not at all, at least in our case. I gave her half a packet for maybe 2-3 days and it made all the difference. she's been fine ever since

$1500!! :eek3::eek3::eek3:

Giardia is curable so no worries. It happens often especially from irresponsible breeders such as this one. Could always mention it to the breeder, never know if they would do anything, worth a try at least.

Metronidazole could just need a longer course to work. Probiotics and fortiflora or something similar would be a good addition as well. Keep getting those fecals checked every few weeks to make sure they don't find anything else and to know when the Giardia is gone.

Hopefully it’s only Giardia. If I remember correctly, giardia treatment should be repeated after several days given the incubation period of the cysts, but I’d guess your vet would know that?

I’m guessing with that price the kitten comes with the health guarantee, shouldn’t the breeder bare the costs of the treatment? I’d check the contract. It’s unbelievable that they sold you a kitten with a diarrhea. What do they say?

Any reputable breeder has a health guarantee, I would contact the breeder immediately. If they do nothing, I would make sure people know that this breeder does not care about the health of their kittens and is clearly just in it to sell kittens at a high price.
Sounds like a tough issue for you guys, I really hope a good solution is found for your little one!

Yes she did come with a contract, unfortunately it only covers "congenital illnesses" and their solution to that is me giving the cat back and me getting a new kitten .. which I don't really think is fair at all... I have had her since August 1st, Obviously we love her and she loves me, that is totally out of the question.. if I am to find out this is some sort of life long issue I will be contacting her to see if anything can be resolved.

I also don't want to give her back because then what ? are they going to keep her and take care of her issue ? or just pawn her off on someone else.. or even worse put her down for it being an inconvenience..

I know she was definitely in it for the money... sadly she lived in a small town house with 4 Bengals breeding and 4 Siamese and litters running around from both breeds .. I am sure everyone of them has giardia or worse !

Well it sounds like you knew what you were in for and ok with it then? I would have run fast in the other direction for that much money. Definitely repeat Giardia treatment or at least have a fecal checked for it again. Also I am sure if you gave her back for another, you would just be repeating everything again with another cat, and she would never put it down when she can make another $1500 off her.

I wasn't expecting this that's for sure, I have had cats in the past but never dealt with anything like this, I know cats can have worms but I wasn't knowledgeable with the giardia or anything else at all, I am glad I got her out of that situation regardless though, but I'm sure she wouldn't be able to get that much more for her being almost 5 months old now.. I imagine if anything they would keep her and breed her to death like the others ..

So sorry for you and your cat. I am friends with several people involved with showing purebred dogs not to mention ethical breeding for the betterment of the breed , placing puppies in approved homes that they don't plan on showing with strict spay\neuter clauses, They NEVER break even financially and always have the heath and wellbeing of the dogs first. What happened to you and your kitten is terrible and a reminder to us all to do our due diligence when planning on purchasing purebred companion animal be it a dog or kitten, if they are not putting the health of the breed first and just in it for the money do NOT support them by purchasing from them, vet bills are always the end result
