Scabby Ears In Cat

Over the past month, my cat has developed scabs in both ears. In her left ear, the l-shaped bit of cartilage has a bulbous, dark scab growing off the side of it, with more scabs on the side. In the right ear, she has a patch of scabs at the top of the ear canal, and a little on the l-shaped bit of cartilage. They are definitely scabs, as I have gently tugged on one that looked loose and it came off. Beneath the scab, it looks like you've pulled a scab off a mostly-healed wound. There is a tiny spot of blood, the surface is pinkish, but there is no open wound. These are crusty scabs, too, like the kind that have texture and that stick up off the skin. I would never do this, but I feel as if I could take a pair of tweezers and pull them all off to reveal clear skin underneath.

I took her to the vet, and he said that it looked really unusual (as in he hadn't seen anything like it before) but he wasn't super concerned. He swabbed them, said he saw tons of bacteria, so he gave her an antibiotic shot and some eardrops. It has been 5 days since the visit, and I don't think there is any improvement at all. He was going to check in after 10 days to see if there was any improvement.

The rest of her ears are completely clear--no redness, etc. She really doesn't even mess with her ears at all--as if they aren't even itchy and don't both her.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? She has recently had whole-body scratching, as well, and even had miliary dermatitis on her lower back for about a week before it went away, but she hasn't been scratching in the past week. She is an indoor-only cat and does not have any parasites.

Thanks!

It could be a lasting effect from the whole body itching earlier. It could be an allergy from something she ate or came into contact with, or even be fungal. I would get some probiotics fro cats and try to build her good bacteria up, it wouldn't hurt and would take care of a fungus and help with allergies. Keep us posted!

If he did a cytology and saw bacteria, hopefully he gave the right antibiotic which would help with that specific bacterial infection. If the infection is bad enough, it might take a while for the antibiotics to help. Five days isn't a lot of time. I'd just make sure you keep up with the eardrops! They are a pain in the neck to give to the cat, but can really help. But definitely have a vet re-check (at 10 days?), another ear swabbing, and hopefully there will be a lot of improvement.
:vibes: :alright:

I don't know what could be causing the problem but please keep us posted. I'm sorry that your cat is going through this and hope the vet is able to find a solution soon.
