I had some marmalade and toast for breakfast this morning and chewing away I bit down on this. Not sure whether came from the bread or marmalade.
Looks like a combing bit or something..black tip is hard and sharp..glad didn't swallow it!!

Yum. It does look like a piece from a hairbrush or similar. Was this homemade or store bought marmalade?

Then I would call the customer service department for the product and send them a picture of the object. At the very least you should get some free coupons.

When I was 16 I was eating a bowl of mixed vegetables from Birds Eye and I found half of a smoked cigar mixed in with them. I almost got sick when I realized some low life had that in their mouth.

My mother wrote to them and sent them the cigar. I don't remember what their reply was. I believe they just apologized.

I remember my mom opening up a can of green beans a long, long time ago. Sitting right on top was a big (I mean huge) red grasshopper. She didn't do anything about it except laugh and throw it out. And yes, she ate the green beans....protein?

You got those bread products all at once? If you know any teenage boys they will consume it in one sitting. Otherwise yes donate, share, do a fall season stay in and host a movie night with your friends and a bunch of sandwiches.

We had bought too many shrimp from whole foods for a fancy dinner so we brought them to our neighbors who we had never spoken to before as talking is not something people do here! We ended up sitting at their picnic table eating and drinking Argentinian foods with their pup. The grandma made the shrimp ito soup. And since my husband was at home prepping the fancy dinner for fathers' day and didn't sit with these ex-strangers I was given a plate of sausages to bring home so he could have some of their meal.:purr:

Donating any extras is a great idea. Someone will definitely appreciate that. :agree:Things happen (although cigars and huge bugs are inexcusable imo...:barfgreen:).

I had a bag of frozen Potatoes O'brien turn out to be mostly peppers and onions with very few potatoes. I don't normally write companies to complain but it was inedible. So I did. I ended up with some very nice coupons. :) But that kind of thing is more understandable than plastic and other forms of grossness.

My mother told me my uncle worked as a butcher during college and once had to throw out an entire batch of meat because he lost a band-aid. But at least he noticed and didn't ignore it! I don't know when wearing gloves became the norm.

We had a crazy lady putting needles into strawberries at a packing plant last year and virtually destroyed the strawberry market for all producers Australia wide through public fear.
So all food producers here are extremely sensitive about foreign objects found in food..which is a really good thing.

I used to work in a food processing plant.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's a piece of one of the machines that the food was made or packaged on.

There are various finger-like guides that direct the containers along the product filling line. It looks to me like one of those guides broke off and fell into the food before the lid was put on the jar.

Every container of food goes through a metal detector before it leaves the production line. Those detectors can detect pieces of metal smaller than 1 mm. Every container also goes through a computerized camera system that scans every container. If the detectors sense any metal or if the cameras catch any kind of defect, a mechanical arm swings out and sends the defective item off the production line, down a chute and into the bin.

Something must have seriously gone wrong for that piece of debris to end up in your food.

The good news is that, all the equipment and all the parts of the machines that are in proximity to food get steam sterilized every night, before the next day's production begins.

They can't use chemical disinfectants because, if there is any residue from the disinfectants left on the machines, it could contaminate the food. That would be bad! Instead, they use an industrial pressure washer that shoots a stream of pressurized steam.

We're talking about hot steam at 212 ºF and 3,000 P.S.I. of pressure.
There ain't NOTHING going to live through that!

That piece probably isn't harmful. It's probably made from food grade plastic. It's also been steam sterilized to within an inch of its life.

In fact, it might have been dislodged from the machine as it was being cleaned. It's easy to imagine that 3,000 pounds of pressure could knock a small part like that off it's mounting.

My advice is to write down the date and batch code from the container and call the company that made it on the phone AND follow it up with a letter. Make sure you include that batch code in your correspondence.

Using that code, company management will be able to tell what plant that container was made in, they will know what line it was made on, they will know what time of day it was made and they will be able to find out who was working on the line at the time the package was filled.

If they discover that somebody wasn't doing his job, I assure you that somebody will get written up or fired.

I know from experience that the people who manage and work in these kinds of places take this kind of thing as seriously as a heart attack!
