That's nice of them to offer free admission to other museums. The Smithsonian itself is free for everyone, everyday. What a shock to natives to have to pay to get inside a museum.

I think Smithsonian Magazine, the sponsor of the Free Museum Day, is sort of separate from the Smithsonian Institute.

Many museums charge admission fee to cover operating costs and such. There are ways to access these places for less or free, such as passes from the library or Free Museum Days or being a cardholder at a big national bank.

The magazine is the official publication of the museum. I like to remind people that it's free because many people don't know that. It is your tax dollars at work.
