Ha! Staple diet! It took me forever to get it, I'm not good with jokes.

I'll have to sample a bunch of different frozen veggies then. Asparagus would be great.

@foxxycat was there in my bedroom again last night, watching over me. It seemed so real. Guardian angel? :D

Thanks, I'll try some. :)
Peas are good in frozen form and they don't have any salt. I buy a 2 pound package for very reasonable. You can't really tell the difference (or at least I can't) between fresh and frozen. And though I love fresh fruits and vegetables, I keep frozen versions of both on hand for when I run out of fresh ones. They have vegetable combinations with no salt in 1-pound bags, such as "Mexican Style", "Southwest Style", "Oriental Style", "Mediterranean Style", "California Style", etc., very reasonable and very good. I never cook them for as long as the directions say, because I like them as close to fresh in flavor as possible, so after the water boils and I put the vegetables in, I cover the pot and only cook for maybe 2 minutes or so. They are perfectly good. I like a little margarine on mine, and some fresh ground pepper -- no salt. Salt makes high blood pressure worse, among other negative effects. I rarely use salt in cooking, but add perhaps a teaspoon to a big pot of soup when I make it. Otherwise, I prefer black pepper or other herbs and spices.

Huh, I guess binging and restricting is a form of bulimia. But the term does confuse people.
Huh. I thought bulimia was where they throw up.

Thank you so much. I will try this. :redheartpump:

It's called Binge Eating Disorder.
This sounds exactly like what I was doing. It took over my life.

You need to get with your new PCP. From what I'm reading, you are engaging in a high fiber diet. This may not be good right now. Did you get anything from the hospital when they discharged you? Find out, I don't want you to be in unnecessary pain.

I haven't felt able to post here before now because I'm struggling with my own health a lot right now. First of all, I'm SO glad you got help M maggiedemi , and really glad you're starting to do better now. I'm rooting for you :hugs::vibes:

I'm not medically trained, but I know a lot about eating disorders (from long personal experience and knowing others going through it too). What you describe sounds most like Bulimia Nervosa, non-purging type (basically, restricting/fasting/over exercising to compensate for the binge instead of purging). This is a great site that explains all the different eating disorder definitions, and how to get help: Information by Eating Disorder

My case worker just called and she is making the appointment with my new PCP for me. I think they were concerned that my mom is moving too slow. They were really concerned about my high blood pressure Monday and my swollen feet. I hope I'll be okay. :eek2:

Bulimia is purging, whether by throwing up or by laxative. Both my mom and I had it at different times, and got over it without any assistance. It happened with each of us at times in our lives where we were having a lot of stress, not because we wanted to do so, but our bodies rebelled against food and we would throw up almost immediately after eating.

Good on your case worker! And avoid salt (be careful of prepared foods. Many if not most contain a lot of sodium) and drink a lot of water if possible, to cleanse your system. They are monitoring your heart, yes? This can be related to edema (swelling) but is not necessarily the cause in every case.

Is that blood pressure? They seemed really concerned with the number on Monday. I of course didn't understand the number because I never went to doctors for 20 years.

When I buy fresh peaches, plums, or pears, I feel them to see if they're squishy. Squishy ones are usually juicier/sweeter.

Grapes and blueberries are hit or miss as I can never tell if I'm going to get a sweet or sour bunch until I eat them.

You do want to eat some fiber, it's what keeps things moving along in the poop machine. But you do want to caution against eating things that might be too much for your digestive system right now.
For example, the cruciferous veggies that I mentioned earlier, cooking your veggies and peeling your fruits and veggies that have skins. Beans and lentils, I would be cautious about for now as well.
When it comes to whole grains, brown rice would be a more gentile option as well as well cooked oatmeal rather than eating a big sandwich made with whole grains and seeds all over it.
And really I would not focus too much on the "whole grain" stuff too much until your stomach has healed well enough.
Baby steps.....

Nutrition can get complicated, and even more so at times where eating disorder recovery is concerned. When you see your PCP, you need to be 100% honest about your eating disorder (however hard or embarrassing that is - maybe have your mom leave the room for that part of the appointment so you can talk freely), and ask to be referred to a Dietitian who specializes in eating disorders, NOT a nutritionist. Anyone can set themselves up as a nutritionist with very little training, but Dietitians have standardised training (like any other medical professional does), and are regulated. Eating disorder recovery is about far more than nutrition alone, and needs to focus on your thought processes around food as much as (if not more than) the food itself. The food behaviour is a symptom, not the root cause of the problem, so it's not the same as a regular person just wanting to get a little healthier.

Eating disorder therapists often have Dieticians they like to work with, so that would be another route. You need to get physically healthy and strong again, of course, but you need help with the rest of it too. Eating disorders are hard to heal from, and you can't do it alone. We're all here to support and encourage you as much as we can, but we're not there, and you need professionals in your 'real'/offline life to help and guide you too. :hugs::redheartpump::hugs:

I believe that edema is relatively common in the early stages of refeeding/recovery, especially if you've been fasting previously. It obviously needs to be monitored, as do your heart and blood pressure, but try not to panic about it all. You are stronger than you know, and you can make it through this :redheartpump:
