Can you begin to adopt out the cats to other people?

The "owner" doesnt care about them and has already tried to abandon them in a park.
This is a great idea. They are essentially strays, she just boots them out of the house and would rather you take care of them than her.

I'm late but. Are people nice to cats there? If so, consider stop feeding the cats and petting them. Just totally ignore them. Let me explain...

I live in Istanbul where there are stray cats everywhere and a lot of people take care of them, myself included. But everyone obviously has a limit. Financially, hygiene-wise, yard-space-wise, etc The thing is if a stray gets food from X location, THEY STAY OR GO BACK TO THAT LOCATION. Even if they don't get enough food! By feeding more than I can handle, I would be PREVENTING the extra ones trying to find a better place where they WOULD get fed daily. Like outside my house there are the same 2-3 stray cats that me and my neighbors feed daily. Near the next building, there are another 2-3 strays. If it wasn't for our "OK, we won't feed more" policy and we fed them too, they would also stay here and none of the 6 cats would get enough food. Not to mention when the number increase they are more likely to fight and injure each other. So we don't feed more and instead, some of them found the building nearby you see. Or just another location - restaurants and alike also feed them daily. I still feed random cats but only far away from my house. Like when I'm taking a walk. I always have pet food in my bag.

This way everyone gets enough food. Do you think that would happen where you live?

The cats are still here, and I see another small one with them! A new kitten! Don’t know how it got into the compound!

I tried not to feed them once but each time I looked out my window there were these hungry faces. So I still keep feeding them. One time when I got home I saw the owner pouring them canned food on a dirty disposable plate in front of my apartment! But it was just one time! She feeds them when she is probably in the mood, not regularly!

I actually am trying to look for homes now. I hope I get lucky.

Thank you. You are correct. She keeps my household in order! Lol.

any updates on the cats ?
Hello.

The cats are still here, outside my apartment, waiting to be fed.

Then all of a sudden I see another cat - actually a young cat with them! I don’t know where it came from! It is not as trusting as the others, though.

I still feed the cats. I have no choice.
Oh! Let me add also that one of her cats (the other female one) did not return anymore.

I have asked the building caretaker to check if he can find a home for the younger cat (as he also is a cat lover). He assured he will help me. I also asked him about the woman’s cats. He also told me he already reprimanded the owner about this, but is really stubborn.

So now I am trying to find homes for them. If i find anyone willing to take any of her cats to heck with this owner! Soon it is gonna be cold here and like the summer months, it would also be cruel for these cats to remain outside!

I used to have a colony, back at my previous place. But here in this new apartment my husband and I live it is inside a gated compound. So, for cats to come inside they would have to scale a high fence, or be placed intentionally inside. I used to feed several cats OUTSIDE the gate, some just cats passing by. Some were chased away by these neighbor’s cats.

In short, i am now only feeding HER cats that are now always at my front door 24/7. My flat is situated facing the compound gate, so when I am at home in the living room I can see anyone coming in and out of the compound, whether cats or humans. Each time I see this owner come home, it is very seldom that I see her come back down from her flat to feed her cats, so I am left with no choice but to take responsibility. It is heartbreaking to watch these cats follow anyone coming in and out the gate, begging for food. I actually decided NOT to feed them anymore because they keep rushing into my flat and putting my own cats at risk, but I just can’t do it. I always feel guilty when I pour into bowls my cats’ meals and at the back of my mind there are cats outside also needing food.

Would it make any difference if your husband confronted her and told her she has to take better care of the cats?

I think you should feed them regularly outside of her apartment and present her with a weekly bill for the food.

What do your other neighbours think about the situation? Are the apartment managers/landlords aware of what is going on?

Both me and my husband already confronted her about this matter. She seems unfazed.

Her apartment is situated floors above mine. It would add to my inconvenience if I keep coming up and down there morning and night.

This is what's interesting. As far as I know, one of the neighbors already complained to the Building caretaker and threatened to call the police, because her cats, according to the complaint (which this lady also told me about), the cats are noisy, destroying shoes left outside the flat, etc. Still, this cat owner is UNFAZED. I have also not seen a single police so far. As to the neighbor complainant, he said that he does not care if everybody has cats, but just keep them indoors.

This lady is unbelievable! No amount of talking, threat or confrontation works for her.

I need to remind myself to take photos of her cats later when I get home, so you guys can see how poorly they adapt outside. I always forget to do this, because the minute I get home I need to feed my cats, too, clean the litter boxes, vacuum the carpets and sofa, tend to the birds, etc.

It seem to me it would be going up and down stairs would be less inconvenient than to continue having to block the cats from coming into your apartment every day.

I see. I'm sorry. Are you close to any neighbors who love cats or do you know a neighbor who also feeds cat? Because then another option would be giving food to that neighbor and asking them to feed the cats so they wouldn't enter your flat. Or that neighbor's friend if s/he lives on higher floors. Hopefully they might offer to share the expenses.

Unfortunately, I think feeding the cats upstairs won't work, and will just cause me unnecessary exercise. :(

You see, I tried to feed them much farther away from my front door. It is where they now eat everyday. Still, after they eat, they would come back to my front door, lay there, and wait for me to come home or open my door again. The only times they would leave is probably when they would go pee or poop. Even when they seem to be not there, they somehow sense whenever I am opening the door (even when I do it very carefully) as they would come running in a flash! They have most probably now think that the source of their regular food is only through that door.

The only way that I would be free from the stress of blocking my door everyday is when these cats are no longer there or have been adopted out.

I seem to be the only one who has this concern for cats. I talked to another neighbor one time as she saw me feeding this lady's cats and she asked me if they were mine. I said no. Then she told me point blank, "I thought they were yours, because I want to tell you that I don't like cats!"

The other neighbors? As I observe them from my window they do not even take a second look at the cats, sometimes even shooing them away.

It is not really the expenses of feeding these cats that bother me, but them rushing inside my apartment everytime I open my door. They are very fast, very strong cats, considering their now thin bodies. What I usually do is lock my own cats first inside the bedroom before I proceed in feeding them. But one time my smallest cat was left in the living room, and all these outside cats came rushing inside and attacked my Graham. Good thing my baby scurried to hide with only a few of her fur flying as minimal damage.

So there. :(

You are a good person and they are lucky to have you around. If you decide to find them a home, don't forget to try social media like Instagram. There might be some local accounts to find cats a home.

I hope everything works out. :hearthrob:

Man that unfazed owner sounds like a pain. I hate people like that who play dumb to shoulder off their responsibiities on to someone else.

Are you maybe able to make a catery run for them at the compound yard ? Maybe the building manager would agree to that since he likes cats. Maybe get a donation thing happening at the compound so raise funds to help build one . I guess as a temporary solution until you can rehome them ? It would solve the issue of them always being at your door step, and you can still feed them look after them etc. Maybe he has a room somewhere in the building complex where the cats can stay ? If these cats hang around together all the time are they social enough to be placed in a catery ?

Hi. Thank you for replying. I actually also asked about this if possible, but the Building Caretaker said it would cause a problem with the other residents of the compound. And since I am the only tenant there who loves cats, I am outnumbered. I have tried every possible way I can think of.

I have not seen this owner for days. Her cats are still blocking my door, ready to rush into my small living room at the slightest opportunity. Now I have been using my bag to block them whenever I come in or out. When I come home, I open the door very carefully as I know my own cats are just behind that door also waiting for me. I don't know what will happen if they get to each other, especially with my Bourbon. I had seen Bourbon fought with a foster cat before, and this is what scares me.

Stressful every single time.

UPDATE///

I hate to be the bearer of bad news:

Bad news number 1: Another one of her cat is now missing for days, or about more than a week. I am afraid he is already dead. So only one is left of her cat, plus this newbie kitten I mentioned before that I don’t know who the owner is.

Bad news number 2: She sent me a message asking if I had a spare kitty bottle and KMR! She has taken another kitten!!!! What the...!

She has got to be kidding me!!

I am so moving out of this flat in a few months time! Won’t renew rental contract anymore. I can’t take this lady anymore! She disgusts me.

That woman is a bit lost in her head i think to get another kitten if she wont look after the ones she already had. I am sorry to hear that the cat has gone missing or possible dead :( I hope the surviving cat still gets love and food and lives a long life. This is sad.

I am still feeding her cat she left outside. I don’t know until when this poor boy will last outside.
